Techies: Is there any program that will detect network cards
and tell me what drivers it needs? (In my job, we have SO many random network cards, and most of them are unidentified network cards so I can't figure out what this one is)

Thanks!

1. This will help somewhat.
Enter in the first 6 digits of the MAC (hardware) address of the card, and it will tell you the vendor that made it.

12. Almost always it is printed on the card...

so you don't even have to have it installed in a system to check.

It consists of 12 characters, using the hexadecimal numbering system (0 through F) and the pattern will be:

XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX

Example:

00:A0:64:5B:47:8C

So you would enter the 00:A0:64 in that site to find out the manufacturer.

What brand of PC are they?

Are they embedded on the mobo, or are the slot cards?

6. Assuming the card is embedded
It is most likely an Intel card.

Go to Intel's web site and download the card detection software, or their generic driver for Windows 2000. Once the generic driver is installed, Windows will give you the exact designation and you can download the correct driver for the card.

To be safe, go to 3Com's web site and download their detection software too. It will tell you the make of the card if it's not 3Com, but not the model. Let me know if you can't find it and I can send it to you via email.

8. Good deal
Sometimes it takes some real digging around the "Internets" before you find what you're looking for.

9. Getting mac address info
Click on start. Click on run. Type cmd and hit OK. When the dos window comes up type IPCONFIG -all and hit enter. This will now list some info including the mac address. This will enable you to find out what brand of card it is.

This all presumes that the system is recognising the card. Which may not be the case as you are having driver problems.

Best bet is open the case, take out the card, and examine it for manufacturer details. Do this only as a last resort if you do not know what is going on. Preferable to find someone that does.

10. Here ya go
The Unknown Device Identifier. It's freeware, and it's the best utility hands down for discovering what unknown things are. I use it all the time- it hasn't failed me yet.
