Any MacPurists using OSX 10.2 and Safari ? OS X Tips ?
I've been Mac-Only since I came online in 1995. I got an Ibook 800 yesterday - my first laptop. I use a g3 300 at home.

OS X is NOT that intuitive - I guess I'll have to buy a book.

I tried to save my current OE bookmarks as an HTML file and couldn't ! RTF only.

Wazzup with that ? :-(

Oh well - I'm a fast learner.

I did download the new Apple Safari browser, and like it a lot - it's fast - but sure wish I could import my bookmarks.

Any recommendations for OS X disussion boards - and books ?

Thanks

1. did you mean IE rather than OE?
Can't help you if you mean OE, and maybe not otherwise.

If you have IE on your current computer, with your old bookmarks, did you try "show all bookmarks" in the Bookmarks menu? It may show your IE bookmarks there (mine are).

Here's what the help book says: "If you have been using Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Mozilla, Safari imports your favorites from these browsers the first time you open it. You'll find folders for these bookmarks in the Bookmarks Library."

I agree with you that OS X is not as intuitive as prior Mac OS's.

2. Yes - I meant IE
The problem is that I installed and opened Safari before I imported my old IE bookmarks ( by sending the old bookmarks file as a HTML doc to the ibook ) - so all it has is the new default bookmarks which were in the version of IE that came on the Ibook.

Maybe I'll have to de-install and re-install ?

4. I haven't decided whether OS/X is as intuitive or not, ...

I haven't decided whether OS/X is or is not as intuitive as the
previous Finder, and given my years of experience with the
previous system, I'm probably too biased by my past experiences
to really judge objectively.

I do definitely agree that some of the changes were unnecessary,
unless you're looking to market OS/X to Windows users; in that
case, some of the changes make more sense.

ON THE OTHER HAND ( :-) ), OS/X is far, far more stable than
any previous version of the Macintosh Operating System. I
also find its perceived performance to be pretty good and
probably better than I was used to with MacOS 9.1; I understand
this is "at variance" with a lot of people's reports, but it's how
it feels to me. (And I'm running on pretty-old hardware: a
300MHz PowerBook/G3 "WallStreet".) I do have lots of RAM,
though (512MB) and a big, fast hard drive so the OS doesn't
have to page fault much and can page quickly when it does.

Now that most everything that we run around our shop is
MacOS/X "native", we also don't suffer the "Starting Classic"
delay very often; that was frustrating.

Primarily because MacOS/X doesn't natively support the Lucent
WaveLAN card nor the particular hardware-assisted DVD movie
player that's used on my PowerBook, I stayed with MacOS 9.1
longer than my wife (and her PowerMac G4/500) , but at this
point, I'd never go back. Printer sharing, stupendous reliability,
Unix virus safety, native Perl support, gcc, NFS file sharing,
Safari, and many other things just make MacOS/X too much
of a "win" to even think about it.

3. you need "Safari Enhancer"
Edited on Sun Sep-21-03 03:58 PM by dani
it's free and it works great. It'll import bookmarks from most browsers. (I think it'll also import any HTML bookmark file).

get it here on VersionTracker:

Granted, the best way to take advantage of this site is to have at least some knowledge or experience with some flavor of Unix-- you will get a lot more out your Mac and OS X if you do. But there are a lot of nice little tidbits for nonUnix people too.

10. I still prefer 9.2.2, but Jaguar is much more stable
With Classic I can pretty much understand what every control panel, every extension and every preference is doing to my sytem and adjust accordingly, with specialized extension sets, etc. Jaguar continues to be a blur, and disappointingly so. I can't believe they couldn't incorporate more of the intuitive Mac heritage of look and feel into a Unix system while allowing the multitasking and whatever else was gained.

9.2.2 is much superior to 9.1, in Finder performance and overall snappiness. Still, no where near the stability of X, which causes me to devert there on occasion.

You might try the Mac newsgroups, starting with comp.sys.mac.system. I also like the DealMac.com forums, very well traversed and knowledgable Mac users abound. The "Bible" series of Mac books is always a good choice, plus anything by Ted Landau. He wrote the best and most detailed troubleshooting books for Classic ("Sad Macs, Bombs, and Other Disasters"), but I'm not sure if he has anything for OS X yet.

Hey Hoppin Mad, I'm considering an iBook 800 myself, to replace an aging Sonnet upgraded 1400 that can't run OS X at all. What are your impressions of the iBook so far?

13. also considering an iBook
the 12 inch model with the combo drive. My only concern is when a refresh will include Airport Extreme, that way I can get rid of the wire mess  The weekend before Isabel hit, I saw a lady using an iBook at Barnes and Noble's Starbucks area. Very, very cool! it MIGHT have been the 14 inch monitor version, but still I really like the iBook. That way if we have another storm, I can simply use my phone modem and let you guys know I'm still alive and kicking

Meanwhie keep checking the online Apple Store, they have great refub 12 inch Powerbooks and even the TiBooks (but no 17 inchs on refub specials that I know of)

14. Off on a 9.1/9.2.2 tangent...
> 9.2.2 is much superior to 9.1, in Finder performance and overall snappiness

I honestly can't remember whether or not I was running 9.2.2
at the end (of my MacOS 9 experiences); I probably was, but
any difference between 9.1 and 9.2.2 is swamped in my memories
by the differences between 9.x and 10.2 . By the time of System
9.x, I certainly hated everything about "extensions sets",
"extension managers", and longed for the days of MacOS 7.x
relative simplicity. In many ways, MacOS/X feels like a return
to those simpler days.

Maybe it's my Unix background, but I'm much more "comfortable"
in the 10.2 world, even with the radical change from "Control
Panels" to "System Preferences".

11. When I Loaded Safari
it automatically imported my IE bookmarks. Open up the "bookmarks" (the icon on the far left corner of the bookmark bar; or use the drop-down menu) and you should see a list, including "Imported IE favorites."

I'm using Jaguar, by the way.

12. sure you can
in fact, when you first install Safari, your IE bookmarks are automatcially imported. Now the OE stuff, hmmm...you might wantt o see if there's an Applescript you can get from Apple website, or try out Entourage (the successor to OE).

And just take your time, OS X will become much more knowledgeable to you the more you use it. A book would be a good idea for new OS X users btw :) Hope this helps!
