I'm so annoyed at Stagg/Hormel Chili!
Stagg Chili (my favorite) has switched from the venerable and recyclable aluminum can to the less-recyclable and smaller cardboard box.

Why do companies do this crap? I never asked for chili in a stupid box. They should sell both and see which sells best. I still buy spaghetti sauce in a can, and I want my chili in a can too!

(Stagg is owned by Hormel, which also produces the swill known as Hormel "Chili")

Am I the only person who gets annoyed when companies do this sort of thing?

2. Paper is cheaper
They probably were sold on some stay-fresh packaging that fit their budget better. But, you know, marketing departments live to get impassioned emails from consumers. Write to them :-)

that doesn't have hooves in it. One time I opened a can and saw like a heart valve, I never bought that brand again.

10. LOL good one
one time my brother was eating an off-brand can of vienna sausages, those are scary by any brand name, and I was reading the ingredients to him and it said, "pork anuses and snouts". He actually turned colors before my very eyes.

4. I'm still pissed at the coffee producers from twenty years ago.
They went from a one pound bag or tin to an 11.5 ounce bag. I think Andy Rooney did a piece about it once.

7. I make my own chili and store it in the freezer.
Ain't no big thing...you make up one huge pot of whatever kind of chili you like. Get those Ziploc or Glad freezer containers and split it up...lasts for months in there and you have chili ready whenever you want it.

The only good thing about the "Smart Pak" is what's on the next line: Preservative Free, which would never be the case in a can. The stuff in boxes has been 'ultra-pasteurized' for longer shelf life without preservatives. So there's a positive thought.

8. So they need preservatives in a can?
I didn't know they were necessary for canned foods.

29. Absolutely!
Canned foods are Loaded with preservatives, to enhance color, preserve texture, retard spoilage, you name it.

31. Not asking if they're there so much as are they needed?
Will food in a can spoil without preservatives? Is canned chili less "hermetically sealed" than the boxes? I wasn't aware of that. I always thought that food in cans or jars would keep for many years...

32. The method is different...
Home canning, which routinely does not use preservatives has a limited shelf life and needs to be checked periodically. Commercial canning requires the preservatives for health and quality reasons and that's why they will keep for many years. Actual shelf life varies by product and manufacturer. It's worthwhile to review the codes on your canned goods against sites/lists available online or contact the producer to verify shelf life.

Personally, I date all my canned/boxed goods and try to use them in a two-three year time frame, depending.

The ultra-pasteurized have a long shelf life without use of preservatives; again, shelf life will vary by product.

Hope this clears that up.

I like a lot of them...
But I especially like the "Dynamite Hot" with habanero peppers, and the turkey chili is good.

Hormel Chili is just plain NASTY.

14. Are you poking fun?
Personally, if I had my druthers, all the plastic packages would be banned for most products.

I prefer everything be as reasily recyclable as possible, and glass and aluminum are most truly recyclable, they can be recycled over and over again, whereas plastics can only be "recycled" once, and only for limited uses.

www.royalcrestdairy.com

We have a couple in the area. Most people use them because the milk's cheaper, fresher, and uses no hormones, and you can get eggs and butter and stuff delivered at the same time.

25. I apologize;
I meant no disrespect to you - I was replying one Italian to another. If my Italian relatives found us buying our sauce rather than making it ourselves from scratch, they'd raise hell, glass jars or no. I don't tell my father that I eat frozen foods, for instance.

Again, I apologize.

28. No offense intended - cans, glass whatever. It's the Italian thing.
Growing up in my family food was gauge of all morality, and if you didn't make your own sauce you were a bad person.

It's not something I believe - that it makes anyone a bad person. I save that for republicans.

15. Make your own...
dont buy either of those shitty brands (specially Stagg- recently recalled)

Make own from scratch - one big batch and jar it

OR

Get the Carrol Shelby kit and make it yourself.

Tastes better, better for you, more rewarding, and glass jars can be reused - even better than recycled
