13. Can't pick one
I love so many.

of the classics, I think "The King and I". I have a soft spot for it - saw Yul Brynner's last Broadway turn in it, and the movie is a long time favorite.

But Les Mis was probably the most beautiful show I've seen.

West Side Story has the best music - Bernstein and Sondheim!

Sorry, just can't choose one.

32. Me neither....
"Sweeney Todd" for sheer theatrical chutzpah
"The Music Man" (the first musical I actually saw on Broadway) for sheer hokum and positive memories
"Salad Days" and "Robert and Elizabeth" for potent English nostalgia
"Ragtime" for emotional power
"Oliver" for catchy tunes
"Meet Me In St Louis" for Judy Garland...

Better stop there, I guess...

The Skin

16. Singing in the Rain is my favorite musical film
Now that's a freaking movie. I love how talented Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly and Donald O Connor are. Damn! Nowadays many actors can't even act, let alone sing and dance. I LOVE the costumes in The Lion King, and the sets, but the writing (the parts they added in to make it show length) is horrible. Ugh.

48. There is a video of the making of Miss Saigon that you might enjoy
You can get it at Amazon. I have it and enjoy it.
I saw the show on broadway and one thing I did not like is that there were no real star turns such as Javert in Les Miz, which I prefer as a piece of theatre. But he music is beautiful and the tape of the making is fun since it shows the search for the main female character and Lea Solonga is the obvious choice.

47. The Music Man is the perfect American musical
and a hell of a lot of fun to be in.
But I could never chose one musical as my favorite. Les Miserables is brilliant and possibly the best I have seen on Broadway. However other shows have a special place on my list for very different reasons.
I love King and I and Carousel. Some of the most gloriously beautiful stories and melodies/duets ever written for actor/singers.

I love Sondheim for the challenge and the intellectual brilliance of his writing. I have been in 5 of his musicals and would do another anytime. Did you know that Into the Woods is all about dysfunctional parenting and human psychology?

There are some musical farces which are an absolute delight to see or perform, such as little Mary Sunshine and Something's Afoot. Something's Afoot is the most fun I have ever had on stage.

Chorus line was the ultimate musical for stage actors. They are telling your story and it hit home pretty hard... though the show itself is destined to be dated in a way some period pieces will never be.

Then some musicals are burnt into my head because of certain performers who were in them or the choreography of certain masters of the craft. Ben Vereen made Pippin and Fosse did the same for anything he ever choreographed such as Sweet Charity or Chicago.

56. Film -- West Side Story
I love the music, the dancing, everything about that film.

Stage -- A Chorus Line. I could see it again and again, and it would always move me.

Opera -- A tie between Salome, Aida and The Magic Flute.

For a hillbilly, I have fairly eclectic musical taste.

57. Lately, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
That's on film, of course, and that's lately.

As a kid, I was obsessed with my parents' albums of Broadway musicals, with the occasional film soundtrack thrown in: Fiddler on the Roof (my favorite in high school), Man of La Mancha, Camelot, Mary Poppins, The King and I, The Music Man, South Pacific, Carousel, Oliver! For reasons I don't quite understand, they never seemed to buy any Frank Loesser shows.

As far as films go, I have a soft spot for Gigi, The Wizard of Oz, Singin' in the Rain, and of course the Robert Preston/Shirley Jones version of The Music Man.

And I like the 1992 album of Guys and Dolls with Nathan Lane and Faith Prince.
