I dare look for sane persons. 7 days later I'm still throwing up and asking how could this happen. Of course, it's right there how it happened, BUT HOW?!?!?!?!What now? OK, so truth, and I'm gonna make this one easy on you. Describe the advantages, as you see them, of a distro like SourceMage over, say, Debian. Is the compiling-everything-on-the-machine-it'll-run-on thing really all it's cracked up to be, especially by the gentoo fanatics?

As a user of both Debian and Source Mage (and a former user of Gentoo), I have to say "It varies."

It really depends upon what you are looking to do with your machine. Most people don't need a source based distribution, to be totally honest. A lot of people are coming from a Windows environment, and at least in the beginning, a lot of handholding is useful. Others simply want to use their computers, and don't care about digging in to the internals.

One of the advantages of Debian, Gentoo, Source Mage, Lunar, etc. is that you don't face the "dependency hell" that is common with RPM based distributions. Since you are installing from source (and not pre-compiled binaries) you are compiling against the libraries that you already have installed (generally, the most recent, as an added advantage). If you don't already have a necessary library, then the package management system downloads it and compiles it first, then proceeds to compile your desired program against it.

Debian is a marvelous distribution, Debian and NetBSD were the first Un*x variants that I used, back in the early 1990's (believe it or not, I actually installed them on my Atari TT via floppy disks - that was fun :) ) Debian is a wonderfully stable distribution with a phenomenal package manager, and a wide array of packages.

How is Source Mage better than Debian? Well, for one thing, it is a lot smaller. If you want to get involved - to actually participate in a distribution as a developer, then Source Mage is the way to go. In addition, it is much easier to get questions answered since we're smaller. Also, while Debian is certainly geekier than, for example, Mandrake, Red Hat or SuSE, it is still basically a "consumer" distribution, whereas Source Mage is more of a "system administrator" distribution (even much more so than Gentoo - where Gentoo gives you an overall "use" flag for installing programs, Source Mage allows you to change everything, with every program you install).

Another thing is, I just like the "magic" metaphor -- casting and dispelling programs, gazing at information, using a grimoire, running sorcery, that type of thing.

Now, is "compiling-everything-on-the-machine-it'll-run-on" a real advantage? To be honest, while in many cases, you will get a slight speed advantage, that's not the real point (you'll hear differently from a lot of Gentoo advocates, but one thing to keep in mind is that a large percentage of them only use Gentoo so that they can claim they are using it, not because they really know their way around). The point is, you have complete control (with Source Mage, at least) over what is going on on your machine. You don't have a lot of packages loaded that you will never need, and most likely will never even know are there if you are using a regular distro. You can decide which library you want to use for a particular application, rather than letting someone else do that. Basically, it like a choice between the convenience of a pre-packaged TV Dinner, or the taste and nutrition of cooking a nice dinner yourself.

I've been using linux exclusively for about a year now, having switched from windows 2000. There has been ONE distribution that enabled me to get everything done that I need to, and it's debian-based. Libranet 2.8.1 has just been the best linux experience I've ever had. Hand holding for the noob (adminmenu) with far more flexibility than I'll ever need. I'm no programmer, sysadmin, or anything else technical, other than a low-level geek. I'm sure my system's bloated as hell package-wise, but at least I've got my kernel pretty well optimized.

No more daily reboots. Gotta love it.

I just like tinkering. Bought my first computer back in the 70's, and learned it inside out (machine language programming and everything).

Having bloat/extraneous packages installed isn't necessarily a problem, as long as you don't let it go overboard and install everything your distro offers :)

The most fun that I have had in a long time was when mlle_chatte and I messed up a freeper board by uploading a picture that gave them the shock of their life's.

The freeps had my picture uploaded on their board so mlle_chatte told me how to change the picture and I did. I did a google search for the filthiest picture that I could find and switched my picture with the filthy one. The freepers board had a XXXXX picture on their website for about 2 hours. The picture had something to do with a BJ.

The freeps also have a special DU section with all of our messages on their board.

Thanks mlle_chatte for making my year. LOL :cry: LOL
