Poll question: So what did you really think would happen on 11/2?
Be honest. I appreciate that everybody has optimistic moments and pessimistic moments and that these oscillated greatly in the weeks leading up to the election. What would you say you thought was the most probable outcome as dawn broke on November 2d?

I wasn't part of the Landslide crew, but I'll own up to drinking a large Kool-Aid. Heck, I thought Inez Tenenbaum could win here!

1. I thought along the same lines as Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
Kerry would win in a landslide.

15. I reread the Doc's Rolling Stone piece
All I saw there was that Kerry with a 5 point margin would be a safe bet. Did he say landslide somewhere else?

6. Well, two things: Kerry would win, but Shrubbie would have it rigged
so it wouldn't matter.

Most of me so wanted to have a fair, honest election in which all votes were counted and democrats weren't refused access to the voting machines.

But part of me knew there wasn't a chance in hell of that happening.

And I've been proved correct.

Just like last time, the dems won, but the BFEE and their cabal changed the rules.

14. Sadly enough
I have to agree with Rabrrrrrr on this one. I hoped that we would all be counted and that we would win, but how does anyone who has proven time and again that the rules do not apply to them allow such a thing as a fair election get in the way of God's work?

8. Months before the election, I thought there was no way Bush would leave
I thought he'd steal it, for sure. But then, after the debates, I thought... huh! Maybe Kerry will actually win! Then I became more and more sunny and optimistic, and I really felt the guy had momentum!

Until 7:30 on Tuesday night, and I knew it was all over.

Weird.

9. Why 7:30? I actually stuck it out all night thinking we could still win
though the sinking feeling was akin to the Titanic...

12. 7:30 was when I turned on the radio.
It was mostly just a feeling -- I was listening to NPR and they were talking about how Bush's returns were already exceeding expectations...

And I thought... Shite. Fix is in, isn't it.

I tried to talk myself into optimism for a couple more hours, then I gave up and went to bed.

16. I despise Bush so much it's clouded my thinking for 4 years
In fact I can't even turn the TV to any channel threatening his presence.

I had an entire year of thought process conflicts. I knew Kerry was not overly charismatic and therefore not an ideal candidate, especially versus an incumbent. "Just good enought to get you beat," was my DU assessment of Kerry in February 2003. Ousting an incumbent was much more difficult than we liked to believe. The GOP had made massive strides in registration and especially GOTV. 9/11 pushed the party ID advantage slightly away from us. The state polls we were relying on were too favorable in key states, based on the predictable relationship to the national popular vote.

Still, after the debates I thought Kerry might pull it off. My Excel model gave him a theoretical 55% chance throughout the last week. The undecideds breaking 60+% toward the challenger looked like it should be enough. I awoke Tuesday morning expecting an overpowering sense of relief in 16 hours.

The keys were party ID, undecideds and white women. We went 0-3. Tied at 37-37 in party ID, winning undecideds by only 9 or 10%, and detroyed among white women 55-44%.
