9. I have 3
A Yamaha FG-180 bought in 1970 added Grover heads later, A Gibson ES-125 the thin one, it was my Dad's, hollow body w/ f-holes, looks like Kerry's except not cut away, and thinner. And this year I bought an Epiphone Vintage G-400 (Korean SG).

I play the Yamaha the most, but mix'em up a lot.

8. Custom Shop
I own like 20 guitars, mostly Strats -- but I have 3 Gibsons. Two are Les Paul Supremes (one in Desertburst and one in Root Beer) and I have one Class 5. I really like these Gibsons... the sound, tone feel. But I also like NEW guitars that get worn by ME playing. I don't understand this idea of "Murphy-Aged" guitar. You PAY someone to scratch up the guitar. Make the finish crackled, scraped and dinged. It does NOTHING for the tone, so WHY would anyone PAY EXTRA for Gibson to do this. They even "age" all the metal parts. I was looking up close at an actual Jimmy Page model. They wanted $28,000 for it! It was laughable. They had at least 15 others guitars (custom shops) that not only looked nicer, but probably played better, all for under $4K.

And now Gibson has a new interent policy. No showing pictures of guitars for sale on websites, if you want to keep your Gibson dealership. WTF??? Gibson is biting the customers AND the long-time dealers. You ask why they are doing this? Because the largest music store in the country is strong arming them! Can you say Wal-Mart? Guitar Center has an exclusive contract with Gibson, that only allows them to post pctures of Gibson guitars on the internet. And it's perfectly legal. Other dealers are threaten to lose their "Authorized Gibson" is they post pics of guitars for sale on their websites.

Gibson claims that they want to drive customers to local shops, rather than have "internet only dealers" undersell. The problem with this idea is in many areas of THE WORLD, there isn't a local Gibson Custom Shop dealer. Sometimes they are like 3-4 hr drive. Here is an example: Alaska has ZERO Gibson dealers. How does a guy in Alaska buy a Gibson dealer, unless it is throught the mail or internet? Another exampe is left guitarists. Most shops don't carry many custom shop lefties? These people shop around on the interent to get what they want... but Gibson gave in to Guitar Center. It's bad for the consumers and bad for the dealers... except Guitar Center.

It goes one step further. Gibson now also prevents guitar resellers from attending "guitar shows" that are not within "their local area". This means all the big trade and music expos, only the "local" dealers can bring guitars for sale. This policy is amazing, and they are getting many people lambasting them for it. They had to shut down the Gibson Shop forums because so many negative posts...

...so did I take your mind off Shrub for at least five minutes?

6. Sure, just learning though
got a pretty good deal on an Ibanez last weekend. It's still slow going and the transition from reading bass to treble is slow, but I'm having fun and practicing almost every day. Any tips?

7. Practice, practice, practice
I know you hear this all the time, but it's true. Also ,while practice is the most important thing it isn't the only thing. When your learning and you get frustrated take a break. You don't want learning the guitar to be your enemy. It needs to be something you look forward to doing.

20. It is easier to get discouraged than to get good at playing
But you got to keep plugging away at it. Never owned a Telecoustic, but I know they have a great neck.

But adjusting the truss rod is so tedious that I can't get it right. Guess I'll probably have to get it professionally setup.

23. My kid needs a six-string acoustic for Spanish class
I'd like to find something used.

Anything to avoid?

Anything to watch out for?

I already got burned once years ago. I bought an Ovation that had been sitting in a shop window in the sun. The neck was warped.

26. If your'e looking for something rugged and good-sounding...
and inexpensive, get a used Yamaha acoustic. They sound amazingly good and are made well. You can find one in excellent shape for about $200.

I have had one for many years that I bought used. Get one with a solid (not laminated) top. They age well and are nearly impossible to break.
