1. I have no problems with it.....
Although I did go into services and disabled that awful "Security Center" service.

Otherwise I am quite happy with it.

6. Try uninstalling and reinstalling it.
It could have just been a bad install.

8. I disabled mine immediately too, despite the obvious oxymoron
going on, I have my shit locked down well enough with out M$'s help.

Still, I wish the little icon in my system tray would fark off, I know M$ ~thinks~ my system is insecure *which in itself begs the question why they release software capable of being so insecure in the first place* , but now I've got this red sheild staring at me 24/7 and eating resources.

14. This is how to get rid of that....
Go to Control Panel, Administrator tools icon, look for "Security Center" in the list. Double click on it on, click "Stop" and set it "disabled" for the startup option.

If the icon is still on the system, the "service" is still active and that is the only way to get rid of it.

Glad I could share it.

and I know EXACTLY what you mean by spending hours hunting down something that pisses you off :toast:

There's little more irritating than a process you didn't ask for :7

19. Your right what a piece of shit!!!!
Edited on Sun Oct-24-04 04:05 PM by Zinfandel
I mean SP2 worked fine when I first installed it...but any little tweak one does seems to have huge implications afterwards on how ones computer reacts to it later, when your not expecting it.

I now have this right-click freeze problem and there are others...

And now it seems SP2 has disappeared from my Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs, so I can't even reinstall it so I could uninstall it!!!

I know it sounds pretty funny, but it's not it's fuucking frustrating...

5. I'm having problems with Windows Media now
If I play something, either from a local file or streaming over the net, like a Daily Show clip, the screen goes dark before the clip is finished playing. I see Helms fall on the floor in the middle of the spin room, but when he starts asking for some help - "Man down here" - I just see a black screen and hear the sound.

Stupid Bill.

16. Ad aware
will strip out most locally installed pop up crap. Be sure to update it each use. It is free. The google toolbar does a good job blocking pop ups and is free. You can block 3rd party cookies but that can mess up sites like ny times.

If your search bar is screwed (pointing to crap search engines) up there are browser jack tools.

Good luck..

13. just a wild guess
Do you have Dr. DivX or something similar? If yes, uninstall it. The problems seems to be due to buggy programs adding themselves to the right-click context menu.

15. I haven't installed SP2 yet.
I may never install it.
Please correct me if I am wrong (and I'm sure someone will!), but wasn't SP2 primarily released to address the problem of people who don't use or keep updated reputable antivirus/antimalware programs?

Since I do run (and keep updated) antivirus and antimalware programs, I see no reason to install SP2, at least not at this time.

Had a long list of security and other bug fixes. I installed it on my machines with no problems but disable the firewall.

I would consider it a minor revision to the OS.

31. Partly
Antivirus programs won't protect you from buffer overruns, though, and that's some of what SP2 was designed to fix. It also improved the way it handles wireless networking, so that it's not a pain in the ass, and made the firewall not suck quite as hard.

I'm sure there were other changes that were made, but these are the ones I've noticed so far.

21. I do
Installed it when it came out - ruined my wireless network, wouldn't let my wife access genealogy sites she has been using for years without trouble, wouldn't allow me to re-set IE to lower security, screwed up my digital internet phone - and all that was after I uninstalled it! Took me a solid 14 hours on the phone to get everything working again.

23. Yes, there's a MAJOR problem if you have Norton + McAfee anti-virus...
It fucks your memory up. I installed SP2 and immedianlty I started getting blue screen warning me about "kernel memory" problems or something...I went to tech support and they told me that Norton + McAfee+SP2 = death.
So, I uninstalled Norton and SP2. Everything all better now :)
And BTW SP2 orbitals suck....

going to have to re-format, i have so much shit I want to keep but i don't want to keep it on SP2 and even have any of it on after I re-format.

25. It was insane how badly SP2 fucked it up
My laptop is in tip-top shape, and then it slowed to the category of "shitting a brick" whenever I booted up...that's if I got past the satantic blue screens of kernel memory warnings x(

33. maybe you tried this already
but I think SP2 is uninstallable.
you could try system restore. I have XP Pro, and I don't use IE browser anymore, so I don't need the SP2 installed.
Good luck, my sibling in Windows misery

32. Um... why are you running both?
Assuming you are talking about the anti-virus products, running Norton and McAfee at the same time is generally a recipe for doom, with or without SP2.

35. I'm not having any problems with SP2, but I'm running from a clean install
My previous installation of Windows had gotten so messed up that I was going to wipe the drive and start over anyway, so I made a "slipstream" XP install disk, which means that I integrated the SP2 into the installation files from the original XP CD, burned it to disc, and did a clean installation from the new CD. Works great so far.

BTW, I disabled the Windows Firewall altogether, since I have both hardware and software firewalls running already.

If you want to make your own slipstreamed XP-SP2 CD, follow this link:
