5. I personally know 2 Jeopardy contestants
Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 12:16 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
My mom and one of my brother's old girlfriends.

My mom appeared in 1974 when it was hosted by Art Fleming in NYC. I don't remember what questions did her in, but the interesting story from that trip was THAT over lunch with the 2 other contestants, they discussed Nixon's possible options given the tightening noose of the Watergate investigations.
The gentleman (other contestant was a woman) accurately predicted that, with the mounting incriminations and the lull of summer to think things over, he would resign the first week of August.
This was April 1974. Nixon resigned August 8.

My brother's girlfriend appeared in 1989. She blew it on final Jeopardy because she was afraid to wager the big bucks on the final category: "Popular Music", feeling it wasn't one of her strengths, Classical and show tunes being more her speed, and her mom was a professional alto singer. Alas, it turns out she knew the answer (question) to this clue: "The title of this song from a 1933 Broadway musical follows these lyrics: 'and when a fading ember dies'..."
a: "What is 'smoke gets in your eyes' "?
She wagered 0. She would have won if she bet it all. :-(

on edit: SO what happened to you? BTW. Mom won a set of World Book Encyclopedia. (Not as good as the Collier's set we already had IMHO.)
In 1989 Suzanna won god knows what, but it was nothing compared to the several thousand she could have won with a little better luck.

7. Airing on Nov. 28th except on the West Coast when it will be on
Nov 29 excluding San Diego where it's on Nov 28. (because of Mon night football).

Go for a tryout. If you're in LA they have tryouts on a weekly basis, otherwise they travel to various cities. Check out the Jeopardy website.

They taped five shows the day I was on and I was a little surprised that the standard of the contestants wasn't as high as I thought. I was on the last game and a combination of shitty categories (for me) and a slightly wrong answer (Canadian instead of Canada) threw me and I got too nervous and held back on buzzing in when I knew the answers. It also turned out to be more indimidating than I thought. On a fwe occasions I knew the right answer but the wrong words came out of my mouth. (I hate it when that happens).

I'm the only male on my show - easy to figure out who I am.

9. Way cool!
Post a thread the day before it airs to remind us. I know I'll forget between now and then. Even though it might not have gone as you would have liked, how many people can actually say they've been on Jeopardy.

I was just joking about myself. I know I would suck and never make it on.

13. I finished with $4,400 & came second
so I wasn't that bad. I had one extrmelely dumb answer but my problem was that in Double Jeopardy I got intimidated and didn't buzz in for a about 5 questions were I was pretty sure I had the right answer but didn't want to lose more $$$ if I was wrong. Turns out I was right on all of them and that coulld have made the difference.

Alex Trebek and the staff were all very cool and the last thing they would do is make fun of a contestant.

14. Answers about Bush* are too easy.
In one of the earlier games one of the categories was "Bush Men" & the answers were all W's administration. One person didn't know who was CEO of Halliburton.

There weren't to many cars around in Martha Washington's time.

New answer is Orlando Lettelier (sp). You're hitting all my strong categories.

21. Absolutely right! Make another selection, please.
Nice catch on the flag. And I'd pay good money to hear Alex have a go at the motto: "Ua mau ke ea o ka 'aina i ka pono" (The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness). I mean, this is a guy who gagged on NYNEX (a phone company in the Northeast now merged into Bell Atlantic): he ended up spelling out N-Y-N-E-X! Then there was the contestant who came from Joliet, Ill.: Alex had a Quebec flashback and said "zhol-ee-AY"!

24. I've always wondered........
......... do they provide transportation from your home to the taping? Are you allowed to bring a guest? What was the lodging like? How long did you get to stay on their tab?

26. They don't provide transportation or lodging unless you have to
come back as a returning champion if you win the last game on a particular days taping. You are guaranteed at least $1,000 if you finish in 3rd place so worst case your winnings will cover the tab.

You can normally bring 6 guests.

I live in Los Angeles and am 20 miles from the studio so it cost me nothing except for the gas.
