IQ Test Anyone?
http://www.emode.com/tests/uiq/

Just took it and scored a 133 with an intellectual type of Visual Mathematician. I got six questions incorrect, but I plan to challenge them on at least one of them and on two others I spotted my hastiness instantly. The personalized profile is scary accurate. What does one do with an IQ of 133?

3. How High Does The Scale Go?
If the require a 130 to get in a 133 seems to be on the low side.

8. on this test, 142 is perfect
but real iq tests can go much higher. i think the record is somewhere in the 230-250 range.

there are also different scales for iq. usually, 150 is considered genius iq, but some tests put the genius mark at 135.

100 was originally intended to be average, but it's drifted up a bit i think over time.

19. Actually...
Mensa requires you to be in the 98th percentile of whatever test you take.

And they don't accept this one.

Back in the 70's when I joined, they accepted SAT's, that military aptitude test, and a bunch of other stuff besides their own test.

Kind of a curious bunch, Mensa. Most of 'em don't seem all that bright, except they get the puns, and vast numbers of them are underachievers. At least the ones that have time to show up at functions. The membership is only a very small percentage of the population eligible.

We were also known, unfortunately, as the least attractive group holding functions in this one particular venue. It was assumed that if there were more than one thing going on, head for the worst looking room and that was us.

Was also the horniest group I was ever in. The place was silly with the rutting going on. Used to drive me nuts when there were actually a half dozen attractive women there, and some short, smelly nerd would buttonhole me to yak about his libertarian philosophy or ask me questions about theoretical physics (far too often involving alien abductions).

I'm too nice a guy to just say, "Shut up, I'm trying to get laid."

5. Agreed.
But maybe it's time to try to put it to good use. I think I am going to sign up for the MESA test. I just tried their workout and it contains the same types of questions. Didn’t bother to finish though. I’m having a bit of trouble concentrating right now since its 1am. and I'm a bit buzzed (is that the kind of trouble your referring to?). I think it's ni-night time.

Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 12:53 AM by roughsatori
The tests must be administered by a professional. Mine is 165+ on the WAIS-R, (I put in the plus because I have tested higher at various times) they required a 130 or higher on that to join. Emode is kind of meaningless, but it is fun. (notice that everyone who takes it will get a close to Genius score, I think it helps them to loosen your wallet to get you to pay for more.)

i aced it, too (it only goes up to 142, visionary philosopher or whatever, i took it months ago)

america is a REMARKABLY anti-intellectual culture.

someone with average or worse intelligence, fashion sense, an ability to run off at the mouth, and who is comfortable drinking beer socially can easily have a great life here. you'll get lots of friends, you'll be treated like everybody else at work or otherwise, and people will think of you as a great guy to hang out with.

on the other hand, if you're smarter than the average bear, WATCH OUT! don't let anyone know! if you let knowledge slip once too many times, your friends will vanish one by one. people hate learning here, so when they hang out with someone intelligent, they just feel stupid, or that you're conceited or patronizing. no one thinks, hey, if i hang out with the bright guy, i might learn something.

intelligence is good for one thing only: getting a somewhat above-average salary. but it is a severe handicap in politics (although some manage to hide it), or in management. so your career potential is limited. unless, that is, you learn to mask your intelligence and sharpen your social skills.

social skills and networking and contacts, that's where it's at, man, in this country. intelligence only puts people off.

45. It sucks
I did very well in high school academically with my high IQ. In college where everyone was bright, I was much better off socially but was mostly a "B" student because I had a lot going on and did not put as much time and effort into my class work as some of my classmates . Now in real life, I find my intelligence to be somewhat detrimental. I am frustrated in a job that usually does not require my full mind and involves dealing with a bunch of idiots including and especially management (except my boss who knows how to play the game). I hate it when people with power step on the most knowledgable person in the situation (I am talking about others as well, not just myself) and are respected for nothing other than their power instead of their merits. A human resource book states that people with IQ's in the top 5% are unsuitble for most professions. It is probably true but what can you do if interviewing is not your strong suit and you do not have an advanced degree for those professions where being intellectual is considered a strength.
I have a few friends. The dominate culture up here is involved with conservative values, alcoholism, and football, none of which I am intersted in. I larely feel like an outsider anyway here regardless of my intelligence. I prefer to to hang out with people of above average intelligence, anyway, in regards to that being a detriment socially. I prefer their conversations. I have had conversations and friendships with people with below average intelligence also, but those people tend to be above average in niceness and wouldn't hold my intellect against me.

Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 01:22 AM by roughsatori
at emode, and you did it on purpose. But even if they don't do that automatically, it is not a scientifically valid test. I have a brother with a learning disorder and an IQ of 100 on the WAIS R; he tested in the Genius range at Emode. I assume they just add points to an already bogus score. It is meant as entertainment.

BTW: 82 is very high for not even trying, it proves my point about them trumping up the scores. The "genius" comment was meant as a joke to ForrestGump.

All IQ tests are bogus - intelligence can't be measured meaningfully in that way, mainly because true intelligence can't be defined. Shoot - I bet that answer propelled my IQ up to 165. :-)

20. I think emode gave me a 134
another online test gave me a 114, and yet another gave me a 172

I took a real test (you'd have to ask my parents why) a while back and got a 154, I took another (different test, but still a real one) a few years later and was at 152.

I'm an orchestral musician. High IQ doesn't help a whole lot with that--it only helped with academic subjects that I had/have a passing fancy with.

44. So which is correct - the mule or the kangaroo?
Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 02:20 PM by Snow
I've answered both ways in the past, and I think got the same score. Kangaroo is bipedal, mule is a cross species.....
Ohhh, also - kangaroo is marsupial, the rest are ungulates.
See, this is a big problem with multiple choice tests. There's often more than one correct answer, so the test designers weasel by saying choose the 'best' answer. And of course, 'best' is the one they decide it is. It can't even really be argued. "We say it's the best answer so it is." This is why I always give my students take-home tests with long answers that they have to write. (I don't think this'd work with classes over 20, though).
