5. I don't know...
Probably not. He'd probably think they were funny...but no one knows where to stop. He did. He had good timing.

8. Actually that is correct.
It was reading the "Dangerfield, Leigh, whose next?" thread that prompted me to float out Benny Hill as the false answer and started the cavalcade of naming those who are already dead.

I mean DEMOTEX just posted how his mom had a stroke.

God forbid but I'm sure DemoTex doesn't want to read all these posts about so and so dead. Leave it alone. It's not funny.

And yes, I have a sense of humor but not about this.

11. Oh, please. Death is a natural part of life, and if we start worrying
about setting off people's emotional states every time we post something, we'd never get anywhere. With all the people who are on DU, most likely at any given time someone is posting who just had a near experience with a suicide, a relative dying, a cancer scare, an accident, a house foreclosure, a hurrican, earthquake, or other natural disaster, lost a pet, lost a business deal, lost a job, blah blah blah and on and on and on, while at the same time, someone will have had a birth, been cured of cancer, gotten a high paying promotion, just won money, discovered a long lost friend, gave an outstanding musical performance, sold a book for publication, signed a recording contract, won an award, blah blah blah and on and on and on.

If I'm suffering from something, I don't go into a chat room, whether virtual or real, and expect that everyone will immediately bow to my needs and be sensitive to my situation. I expect that a few people, those whom I know well, might speak with me and give me some time, but I also expect the rest of the room, even if they acknolwedge my pain, to contionue to go on with their own lives and conversations, even if it's a celebration.

Being sensitive and understanding is important - but come on. Be reasonable and realistic. Otherwise, we'd never ever ever be able to talk abotu something happy, or something sad. It would all become banality as we discuss the weather in lieu of real conversation in the hopes of not making someone else "feel bad".

9. Yes, they are totally unfunny.
Thanks for saying that. Oddly, I saw your thread before I saw them all.

I also agree with bigwillieq about their inappropriateness given DemoTex's mother and her stroke. If an airlift to Atlanta is being considered, that was a bad stroke. I wish the lady well.

10. unfunny, but not disrespectful
Unfunny because they are mostly unoriginal copycats, which is par for the creatively-deprived adolescents running amok on DU.

But not disrespectful. Everybody dies, and there is no sense pretending otherwise. It is the great equalizer. A little humor is a normal reaction to the utter inevitability and sheer force of the unknown surrounding death. It reveals a tension with our discomfort about death to make jokes about it. Why do you think black humor is popular?

Americans have the 2 dumbest taboos in western culture... sex and death. Shed these taboos, and let 'em have their yuks.

You can be sure the dead would not be offended or have an opinion on these matters. Comes with the territory.

12. Good grief!
I don't care much for being labeled a creatively-deprived adolescent just for starting a Paul is Dead post and a Bela Lugosi's Dead post...You check my posts I am always supportive of people who need support.
