18. Mexican or Vietnamese
Real Mexican - not the "throw some food into a tortilla, drench it in red sauce and serve with refried beans and Spanish rice. I want my spicy chocolate chicken, damn it (pollo con mole).

There's also a great Vietnamese place in town. The owner recognizes regular customers and will make suggestions on new menu items that he thinks they'll like - he got me hooked on Sesame Soy - which is offered in three different flavors - little sweat, medium sweat, a lot of sweat. I go for a lot of sweat.

MY stepmom used to make the shit with about 3 Hersheys Special Dark chocolate bars. Way GROSS! Plus, she chucked in a box of raisins. Oh man, talk about learning to COOK, the NASTIFYING WAY. GAG, trust me, the starving SUDANESE would refuse THAT bitch's food!!!! There was also "greasy spaghetti" and "chicken-ass burritos". Take your pick--it was ALL nasty. I am SERIOUS, she used to buy BOXES, HUGE BOXES, of chicken asses, and make fucking NASTY BURRITOS out of them, not even cook them long enough to be TENDER. She just kinda SAUTEED the bastards and threw them in yer burrito with some beans and rice. GAGOLLA!!!!!!!!!

It's more like baker's chocolate - it's not as sweet, and it's mixed in with different spices, crushed peanuts, etc. It's quite good and spicy. I would recommend trying it sometime.

43. Do you have a good mole recipe?
I haven't had any that was really good since I moved from San Antonio. I've given up on getting any good Mexican food here in Ok and am settling for half way decent Tex-Mex. Not many places can even do that well.

And I don't even want to talk (too much) about what people here in Ok call hot sauce. It's either so hot it has no flavor or else it has so much sugar it isn't edible. Thankfully this year I grew my own tomatoes and peppers so I could make my own. Mine is pretty good but it's not great.

45. Unfortunately, no...
But if you're in Oklahoma and in Tulsa, there's a good restaurant on 15th and Sheridan called Santa Fe - at least it was last time I went. I've heard some bad things about it since. Anyway, they have a pollo con mole dish. There's another small one just north of 21st on Garnett whose name I can't remember, and they have mole as well.

I love San Antonio - I had some really good mole down there when I went to the fiesta one year. You're not going to find as good Mexican food here, but we're getting better.

53. Unfortunately
I'm a good 200 miles at least from Tulsa. The nearest largish city is Lawton and so far I've found one decent Mexican food restaurant there. The problem with them is they aren't consistent though. One day the chips are warm, the hot sauce is good and the Tex-mex is fine. Then, the next time you eat there, you swear you're never going back. Of course, you do end up going back hoping for the good days.

I wish I could get into the Indian Taco thing but so far blech!

On Edit:

My queer friend didn't get beat to death, my aunt (God rest her soul) DID GET CRABS (well, she SLEPT with the asshole lead singer--"I like womans wid big legs" and I got dry-humped on the dance floor), and they provided lemon slices for the soup. And, my hair didn't catch on FIRE like it did at the GERMAN RESTAURANT in Portland. What was THAT bastard called? The Rhinelander? Damn, it was about 21 years ago. Gross food, good BREAD.

31. Right about the dolmada
My people are Croatian, we wrap our "yucky shit" in cabbage leaves, which are slightly more palatable.

Mad Greek is a different place than what you're talking about. It's up in the NW, across the street from the Rock Creek Deli, which is owned by the same bunch and also has pretty exciting food.

Don't miss it any time you're anywhere close to the Pacific Northwest!

Everybody brought food that reflected their own ethnicity. There was Italian food (my favorite), Slovak (Pigs in a Blanket, Pierogies, etc.), German, Chinese, etc. I took Swedish Meatballs and Swedish Nut Rolls and Absolut!

It was a great idea for a party. We had a blast!

23. Indian: especially uppma
Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 10:04 PM by barking_23
I'm not sure if you're asking about cuisine types in general or specific dishes.

But uppma (prounounced oohp-muh) is probably my most favorite ethnic dish. It's certainly the "ethnic" dish I make most often. It can be made in dozens of ways and I've never seen it on a menu in Indian restaurants. Not fancy enough for restaurants, I suppose, though it can be made elaborately.

It's very *homestyle*. So it's not offered in restaurants. But so soul-satisfying.

Generally it's made from farina (cream-of-wheat) and spices with some vegetables (sometimes also with coconut). Somewhat a south-Indian homestyle comfort-food type dish. Good for brunch, lunch or a late-night meal.

33. I go to NY fairly often
Great ethnic food of all kinds.

EXCEPT Mexican food. In Chicago, there are hundreds of Mexican places where one can get ok Mexican food. But in NY I have yet to find a place where the food is better than the average Chi-Chis.

Hell, the guys who come into the bars selling tomales out of coolers are better than NY Mexican food.

Then again, there about 1 million Mexicans living in Chicago so I suppose there is a larger N.

Oh, go and try to find masa in Manhatten.

But Indian is what I hanker for most often, followed closely by Chinese.

My faves: Garlic or peshwari naan, samosa, mango lassi, dal makhani and navratan korma! In fact, I'm going to an Indian restaurant with friends in about two and a half hours. Yikes! I'd better start my Pepcid regimen.

But there is actually a better place in Boston (and Boston Ethiopian pales in comparison to Denver Ethopian).

There's a place near Mission Hill called Fasikas. It's a total hole in the wall and turns into an Ethiopian night club after hours, but man, the food is darn good. If you ever make it back to Boston I recommend it :-)

I like Indian food a lot. My parents are Indian, but like the restaurant stuff because it's north Indian stuff. Someone mentioned garlic naan...with maater paneer or navratan koorma...good stuff.

I also like Thai. Damn that's some good stuff.

Italian is good. So is Mexican, though all the restaurants nearby are chains and not very good at that.

Arabic food is good. I haven't had it in a while.

I haven't tried Ethiopean. I've heard it's pretty good. I heard there's a restaurant in Ann Arbor, MI (the Blue Nile?). My friends aren't quite as brave though.
