I know they suck now, but, dammit, they had it once. And Breadfan is the shit, man.

3. They're excellent, but...
...just listen to the 'dialogue' between lead and rhythm guitar on Breadfan, and the powerful Burton bassline carrying it all. It's fucking awesome.

I even prefer it to the Budgie version; that guy's voice is fucked up...it makes Geddy Lee sound like Michael Gira.

6. Ride the Lightning, man...

Ride the Lightning...

Somewhere along the line they opted for riding the sawbuck, and they've sucked wind every since.

8. Yes, yes they were
While it is true that most fans have denied the existence of Metallica past "The Black Album", and even more hardcore fans think "Puppets" was the last one (citing the death of Cliff as the true end of the group), I feel alone among my circle of friends. I actually liked "Load" and "RELoad". Granted, it was something different, a bold step in a new direction for the band, but it still held the Metallica "sound". The in-your-face guitars of TBA were replaced with more melodic, toned down ones...but there was still the spark. (not to mention that the whole S&M thing was kinda cool). That "thing" (for lack of a better word) that gave the music the big "oomph". Passion and soul come to mind, but it sounds too cliche to me.

Unfortunately, with the release of St. Anger, the spark was lost. A local radio station had a Metallica premier weekend where over the course of two days they played St. Anger all the way through at least 10 times. I managed to listen to the majority of songs, hoping that the first single was the one not so great song on the record (we all know that 9 out of 10 records have them), but I was disappointed. The guitars sounded castrated and the vocal work left much to be desired. It's sad, really...the rebellious band of old turned into an over-produced shell of their former glory :(

Sorry about the rant =/

I'm partial to the cover of "Stone Cold Crazy" myself.

10. I thought they lost it after "And Justice For All"
I've liked a few songs since then, but they haven't turned out a whole album that I liked since then. It used to be that when a new Metallica album came out you just knew you were going to like every single song. I think they lost that after "And Justice For All."

I fucking love that song. Fast, with a break, and then kick-your-ass fast again.

It's in my top ten of favorite covers.

11. For Whom The Bell Tolls.
I like the song so much, I read the book!

If any of you read it and know the lyrics... do you think the lyrics are based on Sordo's last stand? That's what I think it is.
