1. Used in strip mining, I believe.
Big wheel on the left digs into the hillside, throwing what it scoops onto a conveyor belt back to the center. What happens then I'm not sure.

I guessed that before I looked.

Looks like a giant earth mover. You could cut chunks off a mountain with that thing.

his dad used to work on one in Australia. They're for mining coal.

6. Looks like one of Peabody Coal's "small" machines...
Out in west Indiana. They had to close I-70 for a while many years ago when they moved one across the highway to continue its stripping.
