WILKES-BARRE - Wearing an ankle brace and in considerable pain, Hazleton resident Arthur Gardner on Sunday accomplished his goal - breaking the official world record for marathon bowling.
"It feels great!" Gardner, 47, exclaimed after knocking down 23,393 pins during 55 hours and 20 minutes of continuous bowling. "Physically, I'm a hurting man."
Cheers and applause broke out, party horns were blown, and confetti was thrown as Gardner finished his 177th consecutive game at 5:20 p.m. at Stanton Lanes. Gardner's wife, Heather, hugged and kissed him, and his brother "Red" hung a wreath around his neck.
Gardner had broken the Guinness Book of World Records official marathon bowling record by four minutes.
Yet it is unclear if Gardner's record will stand.
