Ya know, it smelled incredible, but it tastes kind of flat. I can think of anything I missed. If it tasted half as good as it smelled, I wouldn't be so disappointed.

1. Did you forget celery or onions?

You can spruce up the flat taste with a dollop of sour cream or a dash of cream sherry in the bowl

Did you add carrots. Carrots are good for sweetness, and oregano goes with any kind of legume.

6. Does it need salt or pepper?
When we cook it, I like to cook some smoked ham or something similar in it. If you're not a meat or ham type of person, maybe a bit of smoke flavoring?

7. I used a hamsteak in it
and just added more salt and pepper. Let's hope that makes the difference.

8. I'll bet you usually make it with ham hocks, no?
The bone adds a lot of flavor that the HAM does not...also ham hocks are smoked...try a little dash (very little) of liquid smoke if you have it in the pantry.

10. actually I use a ham bone from a baked ham
but I wanted to make this for my mother who is having surgery today, and I didn't have time to bake a ham first. So I bought a ham steak that had a small bone in it.

9. I'm not a person who salts everything...
...in fact, my mom says I under salt most of the things I cook, but split pea soups needs a generous amount of salt, IMO. I like it thick. Yum!

12. When I make it, if it needs something extra
I'll add some cavender's Greek seasoning to it. Yum...
