DU computer gods - my mother needs help with IE
Edited on Sat Aug-21-04 08:46 AM by meg
My mother just got a brand new HP laptop and my brother set it up for her with Earthlink. She called me to ask for help getting onto Air America - she's 75, isn't that great.

I tried to walk her through the connection over the phone, but she couldn't tell me where the address field was.

I came over to her condo and low and behold: She doesn't have an address field. I tried the following:

1. checked the address field in the toolbar with the result that the word 'address' appeared after the last icon on the line that starts with 'back' arrow. There was no field to enter a URL
2. tried to expand address, but there was really no field to grab onto. IE help says you can expand the field, but what if there is nothing there? Tried anyway, no luck.
3. tried uninstalling IE - really can't do that on IE. Then downloaded the latest install wizard and ran it. The new version has the same problem.

Help! Help! How can mom get to buzzflash? Right now she has to use the search button.

Thanks in advance!

2. Right click anywhere in the toolbar field
Edited on Sat Aug-21-04 08:47 AM by Seldona
at the top of the browser window.

There should be an address bar option.

Click that.

4. I did the view - toolbar - check address already
That only brought up the word 'address' with NO field to enter the URL into.

6. Another possibility
Right-click on the toolbar and uncheck the Lock the Toolbars option, then drag the line to the right of the go button next to the word Address to the right. Then recheck the Lock the Toolbars option to keep someone from messing it up again.

7. She doesn't have a 'Go' button
That was missing, too. I will try the lock/unlock sequence, though.

Thanks.

3. once you get that address window, get someone to help her
download 'firefox' at http://www.mozilla.org/ and used that for a browser instead of IE. its faster, easier to use, less buggy and more secure. it's very easy. it's freeware too!
I stopped using IE and my extreme probs went away. no pop ups. no security flaws that say "Come get me, script kiddie"

she can also stream democracy now! and either stream OR download counterspin from fair.org.

yay mom!

5. I brought over Mozilla
That's what I use, but decided not to install it because then I would have to mess with the Earthlink Accelerator. I'll probably end up doing that anyway!

12. Another one here.
You and franmarz and I 'belong' to the same club. 70-something Moms.
I got on the net about 6 years ago - and can't understand seniors who won't. It's such a blast! Anyhow - just wanted to say :hi: to you both.
It's nice to know you're 'here', too.

14. Son of a gun.Brook, I thought I was one of the only ones----
Frankly,I don't know how I lived without it.Right now I'm tracking the flight that my daughter, husband, and 3 little ones are on. I always breathe a sigh or relief when they land.

Silly, but that's the way it is.

16. Not silly at all.
Keeping track of precious family is (as 'someone' once said) A Good Thing!

Much less important - but fun - I'd tracked a UPS parcel last week. About five minutes later, I heard their truck pull up. He was so surprised when I answered the door before the bell.

I've also been doing a lot of medical research for some recent health problems. Helps me stay on top of things and be a co-director of any treatment. Just two of 1000's of advantages/adventures.

17. Yes,it's fun,and I feel sorry for those of our age that won't try it---
I bought my first E-Tickets on Travelocity last year and when I hit the "BUY NOW" button I actually cheered for myself.

I take classes in the winter and the internet has made research a snap.

Cheers!!!!

11. Mom needs help----SO
I applaude you for helping your 75 year old mother. Us mothers should try to learn from our daughters. I am 76, and my daughter set me up and I can e-mail, and play card games. I also am able to go on DU, curtesy of my son, so between the two of them I am able to use a computer. It has opened up a new world of interest for me, as I can tool around the Hermitage, Louvre Prado and British Museum. You are a good girl.

that has opened up a whole new world for us in our Senior years.

Keeps me young. Sometimes the younger ones are talking about a musician that I've never heard of so I do the research and, voila,I've learned something new.
