Could Drum Corps International (DCI) ever be considered an Olympic sport?
Edited on Tue Aug-17-04 12:28 AM by kgfnally
I marched, with the Madison Scouts, back in 1994. As far as physical activities and dedication to "getting the job done" go, it was the most challenging thing I've ever done.

(Seriously. You try flinging a flag around from 9AM to 9PM six days a week for three months or so. Oh, yeah- you have to run while you do it!)

So how about it? Could the Olympics handle a hundred or so 132 member teams?

Go on- giggle. But hey, at least it's not PRO WRESTLING or something :silly:

1. I would think ...
WGI would be better suited for the olympics.

But I'm biased :P

Did you ever march in Stockton, CA. They had a show at Stagg Stadium every year in July.

Concord and Anaheim.

I found out in CA how the high school water the football fields.

At the end of each rehearsal day, we would perform a run-through of the whole show. Note I said 'perform'- we did it with us entering and leaving a stadium, and we were expected to execute all the additions and alterations to the show that were made that day.

As we were entering the field in our straight, vertical line, I noted out of the corner of my eye a fountain of water in the corner of the football firled. I didn't think anything of it, as I was otherwise occupied at the time. I'm glad it didn';t really get my attention....

As we went through thw show, the dry space on the field became smaller and smaller' it turns out that that little fountain of water was in each corner of the field, and the water was meant to spread.

By the end of thw show, the football field we were practicing on was covered in two inches or so of water, but for the center, at half an inch deep.

Now, our colorguard that year ended the show dramatically- we raised the flag up to a 45 degree angle in one hand, raised our other hand up the same way- and then dropped the flag and fell on our sides.

SPLASH!!

(The end of the video afterward was quite funny.... one big splash over the entire field.)

7. DCI hands out rings, last I knew.
A ring would be more appropriate for them, really, and a hell of a lot cheaper.

and tell him thanks for me.

I went to the show at WMU's stadium here in Kzoo this July 10. Madison was there, and they had the crowd on its feet before they stopped.

edit: in the 70s, hmm? What does he think of what DCI has become?
