Escape-A-Date Service From Cingular Wireless
(My apologies if you've seen this before. It's about a week old already. -- Allen)

<snip>

Have you ever been stuck on a really boring date? A new feature from Cingular Wireless might not help you solve the problem, but it suggests a funny way of trying.

The company's Escape-a-Date feature allows you to prearrange a phone call that will ring during that potentially disastrous dinner and provides you with a humorous reason to dump your not-so-significant other.

The feature is one of several being offered by Cingular's Voice Connect, which charges customers an additional $4.95 a month to use the Escape-a-Date service as well as set wake-up calls and receive jokes of the day and trivia. Cingular introduced the new "fun services" to attract younger customers, said Patti Keller, a product manager for the company.

<snip>

... One message instructs you to "put a shocked look on your face" and "tell 'em your friend is having some trouble with superglue and needs some help." Another excuse revolves around having a pet iguana, and one simply urges you to say your friend was "looking in his fridge and found some pudding that's shaped like Elvis."

1. Now THAT'S funny!
I've only had a few dates like that, thankfully. And we didn't have cell phones yet.

The worst was in 1984, where I told him I hated science fiction, but he insisted on going to see "Dune" and I fell asleep.

Hey, I warned him!

3. Relax, EP.
Thanks to the therapeutic efforts of the geek I married, I am now opening my mind to science fiction, and actually told HIM we needed a nice bound copy of Dune for our bookshelf.

I've seen and been exposed to several Philip K. Dick works, (plus several other authors) and am much more into sci fi now than I was then.

And since I saw the remake I find the story much more interesting. For what it's worth, I've heard many people slag the version with Kyle MacLachlan and Sting, so it wasn't just me it put to sleep.

And note to anyone else-- I've fallen asleep in movies I really like a lot, at concerts, at parties...you name it! I think I'm borderline narcoleptic.

4. Well, that's encouraging, and I have to agree...
I really think they did a hack job on Dune in that version.

5. They copied a website that did the same thing a couple of years ago...
I can't for the life of me remember the name of the website, but a brother/sister team had developed blow-off messages, and you could sign up on their website. Wish I could remember more about it.
