What football team should I cheer for?
I live here in Alabama so college football is king. While I prefer college much more to pro I still love the game and enjoy watching it no matter what level. Since there is no pro team in AL I do not have any particular alliance to a pro team. So what team should I cheer for and why? I will pull for the team whose fans convince me the most and change my avatar to show my additional support. Thanks to those who try and convince me.

1. Packers
They are pro football. The have been a pro team since 1919. They have a long and storied history as being the "REAL" Americas Team. They are the only team in pro sports owned by the community (Green Bay). Plus what deep southerner doesn't love Brett Favre. This Mississippi native is all class and shows it on and off the field.

Plus they have a good team, Great offense and made improvements to their D-Fence in the offseason. How can you not love this team. Hundreds of fans show up every day to watch them "practice" and there scrimmage that is open to the public draw 40,000+ payed to see it.

Packer fans are th most dedicated and enthusiastic of ANY pro sports team. You will love being a Packer Backer!!

I guess having to sit in that "dome," game after game, would make anyone a bit cranky.

:)

P.S. -- Packer fans don't count Dome games. We know they're sure losses before the season begins. Thus, they don't count!

40. Why I hate Packers fans
They sit around all day, drinking gallons of Point beer, eating pound after pound of cheese curds, bratwurst juice dripping off their chins and drunkenly slapping their distended bellies.

And the men are just as bad.

(My apologies to Mr. Royko.)

Edited on Thu Aug-05-04 02:27 PM by Robeson
....about Bret Favre? Anyway, he dies and goes to heaven. Saint Peter takes him around the neighborhood to show him the homes and where he is going to live. He gets to Bret's house, which is small, moderate, and pleasant enough, with a little Packer flag hanging off the front. He looks across the street, and sees a huge marble mansion, with Vikings banners waving, driveway paved in purple, and assorted Vikings memorobilia adorning the mansion. Bret looks at St. Peter and says, "Why don't I get a home like Daunte Culpepper?" St. Peter looks at him sternly and says, "Thats not Daunte's house, thats God's house". O8)

Because we might win 5 whole games this year! thats one more than last year! Plus if you want suspense watch Tiki Barber carry the ball...will he drop it? Jeremy Shockey loves to put his foot in his mouth, thats great for water cooler fodder!

Eli Manning has the potential to be great, which is the only thing that is going to keep me watching big blue this year.

In case you haven't noticed I'm a little bitter about last year and don't even get me started on that San Francisco debacle

In AL we talk about it all year. In fall it is about the season, in winter bowl games and recruiting, spring well spring practice and in summer talking about what will happen in the fall. It is the circle of life down here.

Trust me on this, you'll have more to hear, say, and know, when its a more local team, because you'll here more about them where you are at.

plus, they are the classic underdogs, fun to watch, win or lose, they have never even made the playoffs, let alone won the super bowl, you can be the first person on the bandwagon.....

74. So you say.
I don't see a huge difference in turnovers or sloppiness between the two, though I do see more action and excitement at the college level. And you don't have to wait a mind-numbing, ridiculously long time every two minutes for a commercial break, as you do with the NFL. And don't let me get started on the costs of going to an NFL game...

79. So I have seen.
Then you need to study film. There is no comparison regarding the execution of each position and gameplan when trying to compare college - boys - with pro - men. That is one reason that a miniscule number of college grads even make the pros. Its more than being able to run a fast 40. Its also being able to execute within a pro scheme and gameplan. Many times, a player can get "away with" his game in college solely off physical abilities. If thats all you can bring to the pros, you will be exposed. There have been a lot of great college athletes who have good times in the 40, and benchpress x amount, that have never been able to cope with the pro game. Never, has a pro player NOT been able to cope with the college game.

81. Hee hee.
I would hope so. They work full time, while college players have, uh, other things to do. That doesn't make the NFL all that much more clean, and it certainly doesn't make it any more exciting. And, again, the fans, the stands, the lack of ridiculously long wait times, etc... all add up to making college ball THE MAN! Anyway, thanks for the sports page columnist repeats. Those are always fun to read. Hee hee.

Oh, yeah. The bottom line:

LIVE College Football Kicks NFL ASS!

83. Its a matter of taste
Edited on Thu Aug-05-04 04:39 PM by Robeson
If you feel that the game is in the stands, then you'll like college ball. No problem with that. Some people go for the spectacle and pagaentry. Again, no problem with that.

If your main concern is the product on the field, along with seeing how far the x's and o's can be taken, then pros the way to go. Its all a progressive step (kinda' goes along with age and learning) you know: junior high is better than pop warner; high school is better than junior high, college is better than high school; pro is....well you get the point. However, if someone "enjoys", say, pop warner more than pro football, then more power power to them. Its all entertainment. Its all good in the hood.

BTW, cheap shots don't work with me, I'm able to formulate my own opionions - through the age-old practice of observation. ;)

The NFL survives on some of the best marketing propaganda ever known to mankind. I know this from years of observation and close study. In other words, you've done been convinced by propaganda!

Cheap shots? Sheesh. For a sports fan you sure don't know how to chill with it. What do fans have for each other but cheap shots? They're our gifts of love. They show we care. They bond us together.

Awww. How about some hugs all around!

34. Cash in on this, declare yourself a free agent fan
Send a letter to all 32 teams declaring that your loyalty is for sale - whichever team loads you down with the most free stuff gets your undying support. You might get a cool jacket or watch out of it.

35. J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets
We singlehandedly (well Joe Namath did) made the Superbowl what it is today. Without the Jets, the NFL would never have gotten as big as it has.

We haven't won a Superbowl since then, hell, haven't even been to one. So we know the meaning of heartache and perserverence.

The term 'long suffering' becomes your defacto first name.

Fireman Ed is our mascot, and a real person, as well as a real fireman.

The Jets DO NOT have cheerleaders.

Any season with more than 8 wins is cause for celebration.

Every preseason the NY papers pick the Jets to 'win it all.'

The Jets represent youth and the rebel spirit inherent in all liberals and progressives. Contrast with the Giants conservative blue uniforms almost completely devoid of anything flashy.

Did I mention Joe Namath?

66. Do they still use Shrek as a mascot?
If so, I can only hope they go 0-16 with Chad Pennington throwing for 5,085 yards and 49 TDs (I have him in my office fantasy league). No offense, but any team that force feeds Shrek to its fans doesn't deserve to have any. ;)

72. no, that was a one-year thing
When the original Shrek first came out, I think it was Herman Edwards' first or second year.

Oh, and I'd dump Pennington if I were you. He's going to be a good quarterback in this league, but not the type that throws for massive amounts of yards.

Even in his first year he barely had any games where he passed for more than 300 yards. This team is going to rely on running the ball with Curtis Martin and LaMont Jordan. Their wideouts still suck and their offensive line is re-tooled (although not at the tackle positions).

If he's still available, I'd say go with Vinny Testaverde in Dallas as a cheap pickup. Vinny will be Chad's equal in yardage this year.

73. Okay, then they can make the playoffs.
I've got nothing against the Jets if Shrek isn't involved.

My league is a keeper league, and we had to keep one RB, one QB and one WR. My other QB was Bulger, who threw too many picks. I kept Pennington because I also had Santana Moss, and neither of my other WRs were earth-shattering (Jerry Porter and some other scrub whose name isn't even coming to me right now).

Ours is a RB-heavy scoring system, 14 teams. I'm the defending champ. What broke my heart is that because of the dumbass rule about one from each high profile position, I had to give up one of my RBs. I had Priest Holmes, Deuce McAllister and Edgerrin James. Kept Priest.

38. The Panthers!
We have a fine quarterback in Jake Delhomme.

We have He Hate Me. Yes, Rod Smart, He Hate Me of the XFL, plays for the Panthers. As one of the few XFL players who could actually play football, He Hate Me's first NFL touchdown was a 100-yard kickoff return.

We have cool colors--teal and silver.

Our logo is a map of the Carolinas with a growling head on it.

Among our cheerleaders are three bankers, two schoolteachers, a mechanical engineers and the General Director of Stores for Victoria's Secret.

One of our running backs, Stephen Davis, graduated from Auburn. Kindal Moorehead, a defensive tackle, played for the Crimson Tide. (Only sixteen other teams have Tide players.)

We do NOT have anyone who played at Duke on the roster. However, the rest of the ACC is represented.

Our mascot is not a real panther. This is him: http://www.cpanthers.com/fanzone/mascot.jsp

And they went to the Super Bowl last year.

And yet, I'm so bummed to hear that Mariucci is a Bush supporter, and even introduced the * at a campaign appearance.

Ugh!

91. Now Liberal 72 don't you....
....see why you need to be a fan of a team in the NFC North? Has any other division on this thread inspired as much hate and enmity towards fellow opponents as the NFC North? So come join the Vikings, we're waiting.

Just think of the passion you'll have every week of venting your frustrations out against a another NFC North team. The pure joy of watching Bret Favre take a hit! The excitement of watching another Bear player limp off the field with an injury! The pure ecstasy feeling of seeing the Lions get up for that one game a year on Thanksgiving!

Honestly, you can become a fan of any team in this division, as long as they're not: the Lions, and Packers, and Bears! OH MY! :P

94. Well, you've got one thing right: NFC North = best division in the NFL.
Even when the teams aren't so competitive against the rest of the league. Nowhere else are the rivalries as spirited up and down the division, both for the fans and players.

But, really, the choice is between the Packers and Bears. You either go for one last hurrah with Favre and company, or you learn to love the pain of being a Bear fan. Both experiences are musts in every lifetime!
