Has anyone ever gotten out of a car lease?

I'm not asking for myself, thank god, but for my sister. Bottom line, a year ago she made a really stupid move and got into a 4 year car lease with an outrageous monthly payment. She is now getting divorced and needs to keep her house, so she wants out of the lease. She has talked to the dealer who says he can't help her, she talked to the leasing company who said it's up to the dealer, she talked to several other dealers who said they can't help either. I did some research and I know that you can swap leases with people, but I really don't think anyone will want her payment as it is way too high for the car she drives. She has no money to outright buy it. I guess her last hope would be to plead with the dealer again, but I doubt that will help. Any advice?

1. You have to die to get out of a car lease.

And that doesn't even work half the time.

If you break your lease, prepare for substantial penalities.

2. Several years ago

....when leasing cars was becoming very popular, I read stories about bulletin boards or similar services that would help people sell or assign their lease obligations. I don't know if such a thing still exists. You could try a search for that sort of thing.

4. No never, it's not possible

even those rumors of death breaking the lease are untrue. It is solid-clad beyond the grave. I speak from experience. Except for the dying part.
