I was just denied alcohol for the 1st time ever...and I'm legal
So I'm walking from the train station to where I live, having just gotten off working a 14.5 hour day, and I pass a liquor store. I decide to stop in an get a little bottle of bacardi and a can of coke. The man behind the counter takes my money then asks for ID. I hand him my expired driver's license. Sometimes I carry my passport, but this has always been fine (I do not currently have a license). He tells me it's unacceptable and he needs 2 forms of ID. I produce my college photo ID. It's a no go. So I bring out the work ID, Social security card, 2 credit cards and a check card. He still refused me service. I must be the most prepared underaged drinker on the planet to him. SIX FORMS OF "FAKE" ID!!! Gah!

If I wasn't so tired, I would have just walked to the one I normally go to.

Mind you, I spent my illegal years getting into everywhere with a fake Michigan photo ID (not even a fake license) that I bought for $50 on Christopher St in NYC. Not once was I questioned on that.

1. I was denied a pack of cigs due to an expired license.
And I'm 48 with salt n pepper hair and moustache!
The airhead "rule follower" (girl in her early 20's), refused to sell me the cigs because my ID was expired and she had to be sure I was of legal age. sigh....

2. You could have been wearing a disguise!
<sarcasm off/> But seriously if you really were underage and you went out of you way to make yourself look older, I would have sold them to you because of all the effort you put into the costume!

6. I look at least 40.
This little twit was incapable of thinking on her own.

3. Same thing almost happened to me...
I was buying a pack of cigarettes for a friend of mine, and the lady behind the counter almost didn't sell them to me because I didn't have my drivers license on me (I'm 29 years old, by the way).

4. Some people just need to use their heads...
A few stories:

1) I was at a concert with my dad when I was in HS. He had jet white hair and was usually mistaken for my grandfather. Dad attempted to buy a beer and the girl denied him service until he went to the official "carding" table and got a stamp.

2) I was trying to get into a club with my on/off girlfriend. She's 44 (but looks in her 30s). It is sub-zero temperatures outside. The bouncer makes us go back to the car to get her ID. She was like, "C'mon you know I'm old enough." And he goes, "yeah I know you are but I want to see your ID anyway." We had to walk several blocks back to the car to get her ID.

3) My friend has a duplicate ID. Ever since she's turned 35, she has a hard time getting alcohol because "kids these days used duplicates made to use as a fake and you don't look 35." She almost didn't get into the Stone Pony to see Billy Idol. I got in without getting even carded (underage at the time).

7. Never been carded for booze.....
but the grocery store used to bust my stones when I'd buy cigs for my mom.

C'mon, I look over 21 but not over 18?

8. I had to "card" people selling beer at County Stadium.
I used a trick I saw in "Doonesbury," I would ask the elderly ladies for their ID.
Never failed to get a smile and/or thank you.

9. Now that I think about it...
since I live in NJ, my fake Michigan State ID did appear to be of a much higher quality than my real NJ Driver's license. Made stronger with a more even lamination job, etc. NJ sucks.

10. Didn't you know? You age backwards when your license expires
I was denied a beer a few years back when I walked into a bar and tried to buy on an expired liscense (I had a valid one...still sitting in an envelope on my desk at home). I asked the bartender why she was denying me, and she asked "How do I know you're really 21?" (I was 24 at the time). I looked at her and said "You know, my birthdate didn't change just because my license expired!" She replied, "But how do I know that's really you?" I followed up by asking her if she'd have questioned it if the date had been current, and when she said no, I asked again what the difference was. The unthinking little twit got flustered at that point and asked me to leave, so I never did get to figure out how her mind was working on that one.

My theory, therefore, is that we all age backwards when our license expires :)

11. I had an expired license for awhile and didn't know it
NJ just never sent me a letter saying it was about to expire. One day I just looked down & it was expired. Then, I was hassled at the DMV because I was supposed to have "the letter" with me when I renewed it.

One of these days I need to get down to the DMV and get a valid photo ID. My passport is bulky and the picture doesn't look like me. My hair is much shorter now and I lost a bunch of weight. All of my other ("fake") IDs look like me.

12. Oh, I nearly forgot: I was once denied a purchase WITH a valid ID
I am blessed/cursed with genes that make me look much younger than I really am (I'm 29 today but most people take me for 22-23...I can't even grow a mustache). When I was 18 (and looked 14) I walked in to a little corner store to buy a pack of cigarrettes, and the guy behind the counter refused to sell them to me claiming that my ID was "obviously" fake because I didn't look 18. I'd have grumbled a bit and walked out without incident, but the A****LE refused to give me back my license saying it was illegal and that he didn't have to give it back...and then he tried to throw me out of his store.

I refused to leave, of course, and he "warned" me that he would call the police and have me arrested if I didn't get out now...for tresspassing AND posessing a fake ID to buy cigarrettes. Five minutes and one phone call later, the police walked through the door to settle it.

The look on the guys face when the cop told him that my license was real was priceless :)

13. I never used to get carded
BEFORE I turned 18 (legal age down here) but as I got nearer my 18th the punishments for selling to minors got a bit harsher and I found myself getting asked more often, don't tend to get asked now (sniff) although the guy at the bottle shop made my day a few weeks ago by not believing me, when I showed him my licence which shows I've been legal for ten years he was very apologetic, I had to tell him that these days I'm more than happy to be asked!

14. I was denied a case of beer for my daughter's birthday party...Her 10th,
mind you, because my license was a renewal license. Same signature on the check I signed in front of him. I would have been 10 when she was born and she is the spitting image of me. Sigh. Last time I shopped at Farmer Jerks...er...Jacks ever. :hi:

15. A case of beer?
Damn, my parents only supplied cupcakes for my 10th birthday. I knew I was abused...
