Man "Flips Off" Passing Trains, Got Too Close - Train Clips His Wheelchair
<snip>

APPLETON — A man in a wheelchair — who periodically “flips off” the crew of passing trains — got a little too close to one of those trains Tuesday evening.

Police said a gas tank on the train engine clipped the man’s wheelchair, damaging it.

The Canadian National train then came to a stop, blocking traffic at Appleton and Packard streets and at several crossings to the north and east. The incident occurred at 7:25 p.m.

Leland Laird, 54, of Appleton, was treated Tuesday night at Appleton Medical Center for an abrasion to his left arm that he said occurred a few minutes later when he fell out of the damaged chair.

Laird told officers he has been wheelchair-bound since 1989 when a car he was driving was struck by a train near Fremont.

1. Do they say if when he was struck by a train in 1989...

2. score one for the train!

Or score two, rather. Good. Dumb bastard.

He must have tried beating the train at a crossing back in '89, which proves he is a dumbass. Then he shows he still carried bitterness against trains by this stupidity.

Next time, wheel in for a closer view, asswipe.

6. here's some background
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 09:31 AM by ZombyWoof
Back in Spain, I lost a friend of mine when I was 11 (he was 10) because his Dad, who was a speed demon at the wheel, tried beating a train at a crossing. My friend and his sister died, but the Dad lived. I imagine the sight of a train gets to the bottom of his conscience every time.

I just can't brook daredevil drivers. Physics dictates a train beats a car every time.
