7. I Spent Three and a Half Weeks in Downtown Scranton
and boy is it picturesque in a seedy William-Kennedy kind of way. Stayed at the Scranton Hilton, which was made out of the old train station. Behind my room sat the largest locomotive ever produced in this country. For leisure, you could tour the coal mines ("Theirs was the glory; ours is the heritage") or the National Railroad Museum.

Place apparently hasn't been the same since coal production peaked.

13. How was the Hilton?
I'm planning a trip to Scranton for genealogical research. My father regarded the town as something of a hell-hole situated near the Poconos, but then again, I know a train buff who actually went to Scranton on his HONEYMOON. It takes all kinds, I guess.

14. The Hilton Was OK, if I Remember
Scranton IS kind of a hell-hole. Many of the downtown buildings are old. Weeds growing in the pavement. Grimy. It also seemed kind of charming under the circumstances.

I was there during a phone company strike in 1988. (As a manager I had to fill in as an operator for three weeks.) So my vantage point was a strange one -- working 12 hours and wandering around the streets in the evenings kind of zoned out.

11. West Chester.
Or, if you want to move to Ohio, North West Chester (a dear friend of mine used to live there).
