San Fernando Valley DUers - Where to "get away" to?
Heya folks. My g/f and I are desperately craving somewhere to go for a couple hours (no.. this is NOT a vacation) to just get away from ppl and city things.

Any suggestions? Somewhere less than 1/2 hour drive where we can clear our minds, have a nice, easy walk and maybe a picnic...

Franklin Canyon is nice, but I'm getting kinda tired of going up there and the mosquitos get pretty bad this time of year...

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance.

1. kanan
Take 101 to Kanan (Aguora)
Take Kanan towards the beach.
Just before 3rd tunnel, pull off into parking lot on right (not Royal Oaks).

The trailhead has a sign and maps (sometimes).
It's a nice walk that is alternately tree covered or clear, and a nice stream.
If you cut off the trail where it crosses a small creek (maybe no water) you can walk out to a nice rocky waterfall.

3. That sounds great...
... about how rigorous/far is the walk? My g/f is a complete lightweight.

5. not far
That trail hooks up with Zuma Tranca fire road, and the round trip is only about 5 miles.

The bridge is about 1.5 miles (one way)

The water fall is about .8 (one way)

Difficulty... not flat, but not demanding at all.

4. forgot about Roger's road
From top of Reseda hike up to Mohuland, make a right.
Go to the first gate on your left and make a left.
Follow this road up to the Hub (about 2.6 miles).
Keep going straight for another mile or so, and you will see a trail leading of to your left.
It's got a sign that says Roger's Road.

This trail goes for about 8 miles all the way to Will Rogers State Park off of Sunset.
(the only part that is fire road is getting to the trail)

It's a really pretty trail, with some great views.

On the weekends your likely to see _some_ mountain bikes on Rogers Road (maybe even myself), but during the week it's desolate.

7. Yeah... I've been up to Mulholland Park...
... unfortunately, there's no way I can get my g/f to do an 8 mile hike. 1 mile is pushing it... heh.

6. Leo Carillo State Beach
There's a campground just on the other side of PCH. . . I used to camp there in the Summer and hit the beach first thing in the morning :).

There's also Matilija Hot Springs (I think that's the name of it)near Ojai (by Ventura) . . . VERY cool new agey type place with excellent natural hotsprings pumped into man made hot tubs. . . really a nice place.

Those are just two things that spring to mind (after not having lived there for 5 years).

There's also Santa Susanna Pass for hiking which is at the far northern tip of Topanga Canyon Boulevard (meaning go through Woodland Hills to Canoga Park and keep heading up towards that other highway (is it 63? I forget. But it's between 101 and that other highway :). I used to hike out there pretty frequently, it's a really nice view if you climb to the top of the rocks on the right hand side of Topanga Canyon Boulevard (and can manage to ignore the graffiti on some of the rocks).
