DU'ers who are crazy about hockey... We might suffer a lockout!
Hello fellow DU'ers!

There is a chance of a NHL lockout next season and the remaining games of the Stanley Cup Finals might be the last few games we fans are going to be able to watch for a long while... :(

So, to solve some of the nostalgia, I'm starting an online fantasy/virtual hockey league with Eastside Hockey Manager and I would like to know if anybody here wants to help start the league by being a league co-commissioner or if you just want to be a GM of one of the 30 NHL teams.

Please send me a private message (or post here) if you are interested in playing or being a commissioner (which takes some commitment) or both.

Thanks! :toast:

1. NHL Lockout?
Suicidal, aren't they? I mean, it's not like the NHL is exactly healthy and robust right now.

2. I'm sure some teams are going to go...
The business is already bad as it is... It's bad for the league and bad for us fans...

Some teams might fold without revenue. :(

6. Thanks for the interest!
I don't know if you know the Eastside hockey manager game but it's pretty realistic. It can be found (BTW: it's freeware) by using the link below:

Version 1.16 is the most stable...

Just send me a private message letting me know whether you want to be a commissioner or just a General Manager.

Commissioner takes more commitment because I'm building the league from scratch.

Thanks!

4. This is the lowest rated playoff season yet
I heard somewhere they only had 1 million viewers for the first lightning-flames game. I don't see how a lockout will improve the league.

5. Yet in Canada they are beating records...
Over 3,000,000 per game or something like that...

7. yeah, as a hockey fan i've been following the news with some concern.
What effect do you think this will have on hockey in the long term?

I love hockey, but the NHL has had problems for some time and maybe it just needs to die and be replaced by a new and better-run league.

9. The players need to help out the cause.
75% of the league revenue goes to NHL players... The rest is for everything else. If people aren't watching then should the players really get paid as much as they are paid now? It's crazy...

8. I said this before the Stanley Cup was set
two things are going to kill the NHL:

a lockout will be a shotgun blast to the skull for the National Hockey League.

and a Stanley Cup Finals between Calgary and Tampa Bay. Philly vs. San Jose would have been the ideal since: a. everyone knows who the Flyers are b. nobody likes Calgary in America (hate to say it Canada, but for the NHL to survive, it depends on the country which provides the majority of the fan base) c. Most people don't know who Tampa Bay is.

I personally don't like hockey, I prefer my low scoring sports to be unviolated by frequent commercial interruptions (I'm talking about Soccer for those who have no idea what I'm talking about). Canadians are lucky because there seems to be 15 hockey leagues per province, while the NHL is the only hockey game in town for most American cities.

Oh well, I guess it means ESPN can focus on the NBA :)

10. Now that NBC went after a professional sport...
...The NHL is goin out for a season.

NBC signed with the NHL and now there could be a lockout.

NBC is really out of luck and should stick with arena football. :-)

11. and the olympics
it's like NBC had a board meeting and said "how can we fuck up our sports division? LET'S TELEVISE THE OLYMPICS IN GREECE AND THE FIFTH MOST POPULAR SPORT IN AMERICA!"
