Favorite Original Movie Score?
I gotta go with "Last Of The Mohicans" (1992 version with Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe). Written by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman.

If you've never studied it in the context of the movie, and then listened to it later with the emotional remembrances, you should. Especially the piece entitled "Cora." Such beauty.

2. Sergei Prokofiev's "Alexander Nevsky"
Edited on Sat May-29-04 01:04 AM by BlackVelvetElvis
A nice piece of Soviet anti-German propaganda from 1936 directed by the great Eisenstein.
The director (who was also editor of the film) edited the film to fit the music.
Prokofiev's music is a wonderful marriage to the imagery on film. My favorite part is from "April 5, 1242" through "The Ice Breaks". Stunning!

On edit: Not the cantata but the soundtrack to the restored film.

7. Either Lawrence of Arabia or...
Powaqqatsi-Life in Transition

On a windy day walking across a field or in desert canyons its hard not to get the theme song from Lawrence of Arabia stuck in my head.

I'm not sure if I'm spelling Powaqqatsi right, but the score is by Phillip Glass. The movie is amazing and I believe it was written concurrently with the movie so that both are adapted to eachother. Has anyone else seen that trilogy?

10. Koyaanisqatsi made a big impact on me
The second one isn't so depressing all throughout but it is just as powerful.

11. Totally subjective, but
Lawrence of Arabia theme (by Maurice Jarre) is one of the greatest works of synergy between a cinematic masterpiece and its musical score. To really appreciate the film and the music, it has to be seen on a big screen, not a TV.

14. Love LOM
Also Out of Africa, The Piano, and The Stunt Man (which isn't out on CD!) I also like soundtracks that have a lot of songs, like The Big Chill and (don't laugh) Valley Girl.

16. Conan the Barbarian
One of the greatest film scores ever. Not just for music, but for being totally in tune with the moods, the time, and the pathos of the story and the screen action.

Brilliant!

Also, as others have said, Koyaanisqatsi and Lawrence of Arabia.

19. The South Park movie
Okay, it's sacrilege to compare "Darth Vader's Theme" or the theme to Chariots of Fire with "Uncle Fucka" and "What Would Brian Boitano Do?"

But it's a catchy score. I like it.

24. FOTR/LOTR
that first score by howard shore had it all and enhanced the film visuals so much that one can hardly separate out the impact from one or the other on the viewer/listener.
