My stepdad's senile 84 year old mother, who voted for Gary Bauer, called this morning. The convo:

Edith: Hi Stephen, It's Edith!
Steve-o: Oh, hi Edith!
E: I just called to wish you a happy graduation. The president was your commencement speaker! How wonderful!

E: I'm sure you'll be a great teacher.
S: Well, one can hope, eh?
E: You'll be fine. Hey, I had an idea for you.
S: Yeah? What's that?
E: Well, when you get to Philadelphia, and your students have names that are hard to pronounce, you should reassign them white names!
S : What?
E: Well, if you have a name like Rayquon or Shamiqua, you'll never get a respectable job. So you should give them, ya know, nicknames.
S: YOu mean, if I have a kind named, say, Tyrone, I should call him Bill or Roger?
E; That's the idea!
S: Hrm. I'll have to pass that idea around.


I don't think DU was what she had in mind when I told her I'd spread her idea around.

I know it's not nice to be glad people are near death, but....

The problem is that people with ideas like that infested their offspring with such ideas as well. Hatred like that is passed from generation to generation.

I mean, she is technically right. If you read that story it would appear that people with 'white' sounding names get callbacks and interviews more often than people with ethnic sounding names.

Of course it's absurd that she would actually, in seriousness, tell you to do this.

But this country has a long history of people coming here and changing their names to fit in.

I'm sure she's just a harmless old lady who didn't mean any offense by it.

next time you chat that "Edith" conjures up images of orthopedic shows, blue hair and dentures and that you'd feel better calling
her Tyfynni (make sure you spell it for her). Tell her that the eldery get no respect and she'll be much better off with some lipo, breast implants and a nice cheerleader-sounding name.
