What Has 16 Feet and Hates Me?
Four of my six cats were spayed and neutered yesterday. Everybody's surgery went fine, and today most of them hate me much less due to many, many cans of fancy cat food (they usually eat fancy dry food).

All of the cats were given Ketamine ("Special K") and it must be hallucinogenic in cats as well as humans - yesterday they all looked like they were tripping, and not really enjoying it, either.

I had myself childproofed last year - and am having an additional childproofing done on the 23.

11. Hehehe
When we got the GWC (Great White Cat) neutered, he came home, slept for an entire day and proceeded to glare at me whenever he tried to find his family jewels.

Funny thing though. It was my wife and daughter who took him to the vet, NOT ME!

But I did make the appointment. :)

8. BitchKitties: Cat with Tats
They seem to be through hating me, and the girls have rolled over to show me their shaved bellies and fresh tattoos. The clinic tattoos girl cats when they're spayed; they're just two lines, and I guess it's so if I ever forget they're spayed, someone will notice when then they shave them down.

9. I have been through this and it's natural for them to be a bit hostile
You took them to a strange place and strangers did uncomfortable things to them. I'm sure that you know this better than I do. But they will forget as soon as they're feeling 100% and won't hold a grudge. Just keep up with the good food and treats and attention and they will forget even more quickly. You have done what is best for your guys and I know that they love and appreciate you, even if they are temporarily miffed.:-)

He was neutered yesterday.

As for the blotchiness ... a little Photoshop turns an unrecognizably blurry photo into something that looks like I meant it to turn out that way:

Here's another - art or fuckup?

22. Photoshop Effect
Can't remember which one, but yes, the original was blurry so I had some fun fucking around with it. I heart Photoshop.

I took them to the City of Palo Alto's clinic, where the vet does nothing but hysterectomies and orchidectomies (they don't call it "spay and neuter" and call them sterilized, which I like). This vet has an outstanding reputation, and just about everyone, broke or not, takes their animals there because of her expertise.

...and these cats didn't exactly find me. Thomas fathered a litter with Alice after he was neutered last year. I didn't know that like humans, cats remain fertile a few weeks afterwards. I took no chances this time, bit the bullet, ran up my charge card and had the rest of 'em sterilized.

Thomas and Alice are the result of their 12 year old mother getting outside exactly once in her life. Ramona was a tiny, tiny cat and she wasn't spayed due to concerns about her surviving the anesthesia. I didn't know she was pregnant until she was taking a nap and Alice came out of her. She ended up having a c-section to deliver Thomas. The vet was amazed that she could get pregnant and carry to term at her age. Sadly, the prediction about her not tolerating anesthesia was true; she died when he kittens were 7 months old. Ramona was a darling little cat.

25. I'm so sorry about your darling Ramona. That is a heartbreaking story
You deserve so much credit for taking responsibility for these ``valuable little lives,'' as my friend, who does animal rescue, recently said to me. She has rescued kittens who are now up for adoption and I have passed their photos on to others I know who are as dedicated as she is. She placed two dogs with me, Barney and Samantha. You are doing the right thing having them neutered as youngsters. My vet said it's six months for females and nine months for males. I told my friend this and, sure enough, she was sent home from her vet's, with her found male kitten, because they said he was not old enough.

Because I adopt older animals, I have never gone through this. My only exception was my Barney, who had been a stud dog at a commercial kennel and they planned to euthanize him when he got older and could no longer make money for them. Fortunately for both of us, he was rescued and we found each other. My vet signed a certificate saying there wasn't much point in neutering him at his age. I might have thought differently if I knew I would have him for such a long time and he would be subject to prostate problems, if left unneutered. He was my perfect dog. He was a blond cocker spaniel who I adopted at age 10 or 11. I had him and loved him so much for eight years. I lost my boy last November.;(

My resident cat is half-feral. I'm sure I have posted this before. She is overdue for annual shots and needs dental work at the vet's, but I just cannot catch her. The last time I took her, my friend, who has caught cats for the ASPCA, had to come into my house to catch her and she bit him! This poor little girl was on her own for too long and was used to fighting for her life. We are planning to bring her in next week. Before I managed to bring her in, all the cat experts I consulted said ``it'' must be a male. It turned out she was a spayed female and it breaks my heart she was left on her own. At least she is finally safe, even though she is still wary of me. When we are alone in here, she will come out and sit in the window and play with her toys. I have hope.

15. Jeez - Where'd You Take Them?
The Island of Dr Moreau?

Mine were up and about - they were wobbly and resentful, and they all ran under the bed when they saw me. Well, all except Stewart; he was never mad at me.

Mine are all older than yours: Alice and Thomas are a year and a half old and the kittens are 7 months old. I know they can be safely spayed/neutered at 8 weeks, but I personally think that is a bad idea - probably because of my own adverse reactions to anesthesia!

16. Our vet will spay at 15 weeks.
Since I had a female and two male kittens, I did not want to take any chances.. and now I have another female and a male, so.... in a few weeks they will get theirs..:(

Our vet is very good.. In at 8 am..out at noon.. Chinny did eat sparingly for a few days, but she was ripping around then house and climbing up on the back of the recliner within a few hours..:)

17. Mine Went to the Palo Alto Clinic
not only for the cheap price ($35 for males; $45 for females) but because absolutely everyone says that that doctor is the best. It's the only thing she does, and she does them five days a week. My girls' incisions are less than an inch long, and the boys' incisions are even tinier. I took them in at 7:45 am and got them back at 3 pm (which gave me time to take a nap, as I'd been up all night!). They're all acting normally now, except there's very little playing, which is a good thing.

I had some severe breathing problems during my surgery, but that was expected and dealt with, and now I feel pretty much like someone who had the inside of her uterus burned out ... crampy, weak, drugged and glad it's done!

32. I still haven't taken my little half-feral girl back to the vet
She is overdue for her annual shots and needs dental surgery, joy of joys. Thanks for reminding me I will need to fast her. I called the animal hospital and they said no food or water after 10pm. I have done this often with my dogs and it's the same as with your cats, if Sheena doesn't eat, her little brother won't either. The dogs take their cues from each other, though. I'm afraid my poor cat, who I fed very generously outside for four 1/2 months before I finally was able to bring her inside, will wonder why I'm suddenly starving her.
