1. Seriously?
He killed hooker's in 1888 or something...

Patricia Cornwell wrote a really good book about it.

3. I thought it was kinda interesting
I don't remember some of it. I could only keep it for 2 weeks, so I was cramming, reading really late at nite as stuff.

4. I'm going to read that book
when it's available from the library. I won't buy it. During the 2000 "selection",the Richmond,VA newspaper(Times-Dispatch?)published an editorial written by her endorsing *. That's pretty much unforgiveable in my eyes, but I'd still be interested in her conclusions about the Whitechapel murders.

her desired life while keeping distance.

because the two main women in her books are so alone.

6. I like this thread
Saw a documentary about it some time ago -- so many suspects -- even the Queen's grandson (Prince Albert Victor who was said to be mildly retarded).

9. Oooh...I read a great set of books (fiction) by Robert Asprin and
Linda something or other called Ripping Time and The House that Jack Built that had the theory that James Maybrick was under the control of a hermaphodite and was the killer.

10. My vote has always been for him... that is the only logical
explanation of why the police closed the investigation and destroyed, concealed, and denied access to information and evidence. Only an order from the Queen would be followed like that with no trace.
And they would be proud to keep that secret to the deathbed.
IMHO.

11. no...There was not the need to be as stringent as they are
now with regards to records. So I think it was just stupidty that caused all the records to wander off.

but not of the ripper's killings?
there is no such thing as coincidence in intelligence or police work.

25. Yes there are, I agree. But a case of this magnatude and
interest? fuggetaboudit!

Ever consider that the other missing records were "lost" to help cover up the "loss" of the Ripper files?

And there are plenty of case files still there about very mundane occurences on the same dates, so go figure.

I don't buy it.

A whole lot.

Otherwise, why did they shut the investigation down like they did: to protect the royal family.

26. I'm Jack the Ripper...and so is my wife!
Have you seen "From Hell"?

It's an OK film but offers an original but plausible explanation of who he was.

You can do Jack the Ripper walking tours around the areas of London where the killings took place...if that's your thing.

P.

35. I did the Ripper tour in London in the '80s
It was great. The area is populated by immigrants now, but it's still creepy. They even showed us the fountain where the Ripper washed the blood off his hands, and the police were so close behind they saw the blood go down the drain.

The MD aspect was unusual, as was the whole masonic thing.

The best thing about that movie was still Johnny Depp.

31. cornwell's book is bull!
the ripper's name was montague john druitt, he committed suicide 2 weeks after kelly murder......
cornwell isn't a writer, she's a typist... her bush support is indicative of her utter lack of anything but her cowardice, and greed..
btw the whitechappel murders did more to shame britain's ruling class into doing something about poverty and degradation then anything else....in a way jack's a (saucy) hero!

33. I agree that Cornwall is full of crap
I saw a Discovery Channel special on her theory, and it was based on very little evidence

I think the Ripper was the Polish immigrant named Aaron Kozminski. He was actually fingered by an eyewitness after the night of the double murder, I believe. The witness wouldn't testify for some reason. Kozminski was eventually confined to an asylum and the murders stopped.

There is a real interesting book I read that surmises that the Ripper was actually an American doctor, named Tumblety, or something similar. I wish I could remember the name of the book....
