4. Jimmy Stewart
He enlisted in a real combat position in WWII. Also, he and Henry Fonda remained friends their whole lives. If HF could love him, so could I.

Boy, he sure made some lefty films. I guess that's what happens when you work with Capra.

Is there a greater lefty American film than It's a Wondeful Life?

5. Jimmy Stewart
whatever his personal or political shortcomings, was a great actor. The character he plays in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is so far from the current version of the American Republican. I still cry when I watch that film...

7. James Woods
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 04:38 PM by mouse7
Woods witnessed the 9/11 terrorists on one of their rehersal flights, and actually did the right thing in the situation. Informed the crew, called the FAA, talked about the info to the press, etc.

If other Republicans had done their duty the same way Woods did, 9/11 wouldn't have happened. Most Republicans are simply leeches sucking eveything they can out of society. At least Woods tried to do his part at least once.

I don't know enough about risks Jimmy Stewart may have faced in his military career to comment on him. Not knowledgable enough about him.

8. Bruce Willis is a good actor
I loved the Die Hard movies (especially #1), the film adaptation of "In Country" (his performance as Sam's uncle is believable & heartbreaking) and I just saw "The Fifth Element" and loved it -- he was so funny -- not to mention CUTE!

Too bad the guy's a repug and a warmonger, huh?

Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 06:45 PM by Rowdyboy
You've been sorely missed!

Okay, I abhor Gibson's politics and personal philosophy, obviously. I just think he's a very talented, versatile actor with impressve range. "Braveheart", "Hamlet", "Conspiracy Theory", "Lethal Weapon", "Ransom", "The Patriot" and "What Women Want" are about as diverse a group of films imaginable, yet he pulls them all off.

Anyway, all of the above mentioned Republican actors are total assholes and likely homophobes, if not worse. So why did I pick Mel over the rest? Sigh...'Cause he's still one of the sexiest men I've ever seen in my life. As my partner would say, "I want to bear him strong sons!"

I don't have to agree with the low-life sonovabitch to appreciate him as an actor and an oh-so hot-looking man.

On edit: Its all because he listened to his wife and quit drinking!

But I do have respect for Charlton. He marched with King and was very active in the Civil Rights movement and many of his movies could be construed as "lefty" -- Omega Man, Soylent Green, Planet of the Apes, etc.

Although he was a repub how coud you not like the guy. He was an everyman actor. Anyhow I have a hunch he was much closer to being an Ike Republican than a bu$h and dick neocon.

He came out in support of the Dixie Chicks, saying that by criticizing them the repubs were no better than the dictatorships out there...also went on to say that he respected Natalie Maines position, since she was a mother even though he disagreed...

38. I like Clint Eastwood, because his spaghetti westerns really honked off
ol' John Wayne. "That's not how the West was!" and so on.
I dunno, though - if a performing artist is really good, do you ignore the rest of the person? I really enjoy Kathleen Battle's singing, but what an obnoxious person! Trying to think here of someone whom I really don't like as a person and therefore I stay away from their performances even though they may be really good.....drawing a blank. Anyone else?
