Prices are going up up up up
I am a food and beverage wholesaler and I thought I would give you all a heads up on what's happening in the industry. I just received official notice from Workman's comp insurance there will be a twenty percent increase across the board for all business in the state. I just received notice from my main freight carrier that they have put in for a 5.5% increase in freight costs. I just received notice from a major beverage bottler that because of increased freight costs and concentrate cost increases prices will increase on Feb. 1 2004. My company is doing a major overhaul of all our prices and making adjustments to reflect increased business costs. Thank you Bush*. We are living in a Republican Economy and the suffering is nowhere near over. In fact I would venture to say it is just beginning. Happy New Year everyone. Enjoy what you have now because things are gunna change.

Yeah, but if we are going to pay more, won't the quality go up as well?

What's with those stupid assholes, they're the only ones on the planet who seem to think that the method of dealing with decreased ridership is to INCREASE fares.

If they want more ridership, they could provide better service...

I watch my grocery prices and I have noticed
increases on many food items this past year
and no one seems to be talking about it in
the news. Clothing and linens are the only
thing that I notice have come down in price
Everything else seems to be going up.

6. I have already noticed food prices have increased
over last year. I keep records of our grocery expenditures and they've gone up 20% since last year.

Produce is through the roof lately-including frozen vegetrables, which we have resorted to eating because they are a little cheaper.

Yup, there's no inflation in the Bush economy! :eyes:

19. If you buy locally produced goods, the prices tend to remain
consistent.

I buy from my local farmer's markets and rarely go in the grocery stores now, except for random toilet paper, shampoo and such.

And with the tainted meats, our meals have gone veggie oriented. Life gets simpler if you don't cave in to brash consumerism...

32. I'm up north. Farmers Markets close in November.
And I buy all my fresh produce there. Having been unemployed three times, I know my prices pretty well. Veggie may be the way to go for you, but even frozen veggies are pricey up here. And I can't not eat vegetables.

and a lot of my friends echo your sentiments. For those of us in the Northeast, selling was difficult in Q4 '01 and most of '02 (after 9/11). But '03 was worse. I just talked to my old pal at one of the companies I was laid off from, and nobody made their number-out of 10 reps. Pretty bad.

13. Groceries up, up, up...
I went to my grocery store and things were just sky high. We're not eating beef at all. My hubby always eats more fish, but what I used to buy for 4.99, is now 9.99. Chicken, even stupid chicken wings are 3.99. a pound, uncooked! Holy Chit!

I said, ok, I'll switch to eating more beans for protein. Holy Chit again! Beans were 49, 59 cents, now they are now 99 and up to 1.29 a can. Fook that bastard Boosh! Sorry, I'm a granny, I shouldn't be using dirty words.

30. Where are you?
Prices are still reasonable, compared to what you are experiencing, in the heartland.

At the super discount grocery store in town (not Walmart) where you bag your own groceries and there are few name brands, whole chicken is .59 a pound. Canned beans are .50. They don't really stock beef but at the regular grocery store boneless Rib eye was $7.99 a pound, a price that definitely makes it a treat, but not unreachable either.

That said, prices are up here also, maybe even at the same rate, but they aren't as high.

And we don't buy junk food anymore. We have been eating chicken thighs because boneless breasts are 5.99/lb. I also find buying a roaster on sale is usually the cheapest way to go.

I'm assuming you live in the Northeast or California?

$180 for one month's worth of heat. in the fall. before the cold really started (it's something like 7 degrees outside now)
I usually expect at least one whopping gas bill in the winter, but this year the high prices are starting earlier. Yipee for me and all the others out there who don't want to freeze this winter. Energy plan, anyone?

$1.14/gallon and our last fill cost me $569 and that lasts about 5-7 weeks if it's not terribly cold...and we moved in at the wrong time of year to get on the budget plan, so it's gonna be a long, broke winter!

For the warm month ours was $195, it makes me shutter to think what this next one will be.

The other point that isn't talked about is that if people are spending such a chunk of change on heat, they won't be buying widgets.

Edited on Wed Jan-07-04 12:16 PM by DanSpillane
The crude and intermediate price indicators are setting records, if you study reports carefully.

The CPI is an end measure.

My take is the CPI is broken in such a way as to conceal significant costs, but those costs will show up suddenly, even in it.

The health care premium hole is a big one which is unaccounted for, and I am afraid something will fall apart elsewhere because of it, sooner rather than later.

Everytime that we go grocerie shopping I tell my wife that prices are going up. Going up due to the down dollar that's brought on by Bush's mis-management, national debt, pissing off of our trade partners etc..

34. It's creeping oil-shock folks
I just returned from a 5 months overseas and I was shocked at the price of unleaded gas here in the US.

The stagflation of the late '70's and early '80's was a direct result of skyrocketing crude oil prices.

and it's happening all over again.

40. prices go up, wages stagnant
that seems to be the way it goes in the Bush economy.

My husband and I grocery shop about every 2 weeks. We used to spend somewhere between $80-$100 each time we went. Now it always seems to be around $150, and we're not really buying that much more stuff.

Utilities keep going up -- gas, water, phone, cable.

Our property tax bill shot way up. Contribution for health care went up and will probably go up again. Insurance rates are going up again for our cars and our house.

And I'll be surprised if either of us gets even a "cost of living" raise this year.

And what does Bush do? Cut taxes for millionaires. Gee, thanks.

Worst. President. Ever.

41. All of those costs that you say are going up or have gone up also apply
to business. That is why we are being forced to raise our prices on goods sold. When you live under a Republican government expect prices to soar. It is consistant with history. Every single Republican administration is guilty of this happening during their terms. And we are being told they know what they are doing. I suspect they do.

42. So much for the tax cut
My health plan costs more than doubled this year. Gas is way up. Groceries are way up. I do, however, feel damn lucky to be employed. I hope most voters don't fall for the "I gave you a tax cut" line this November. What's left of my paycheck after bills is way less than before Bush took office.
