FDR thrashing the Gipper in CNN poll!
The question: Whose image should be on the dime?

http://www.cnn.com

Be sure to vote!

I know it's petty, but it does show that the only people who
think Reagan was "a great president" are the mean-spirited
denizens of the GOP.

Great president, my Aunt Fannie - he wasn't even good. He
belongs more in Leavenworth for Iran-Contra than he does
disgracing our coinage.

FDR was DA MAN!

1. If this does not get nipped in the bud, a suggestion...
I think that we as DUers should ally with the March of Dimes to stop this-- start a letter writing campaign, maybe even tie some collection of donations on their behalf (while informing those who donate and enlisting their letter-writing support or names on a petition).

In the scheme of things, this may not be life and death, but anyone who knows anything about FDR OR the polio era, should be absolutely incensed by this. I know I am. I will join others in a major fight on this one...

16. I'm ready to rage on this one!!!!
Forget weather Reagan should be on the dime or not. He shouldn't. The issue is, there are much more improtant things that this country needs to focus on. With all that's going on, Iraq, soldiers dying, aids raging in Africa, deficit out of control, environment in trouble, economy sucks, etc., and we have a US Rep who has this dime thing at the top of his list!! I'm speechless. Plus it will probably costs millions to change the dime, just like the recent new 20 bill did. What the hell for? What's next? Change the name of the country to the United States of Reagan? Is it possible for the pope to cannonize Reagan while he's still alive and get the ball rolling on making him a saint?

50. I doubt the Pope would ever canonize Reagan
He more than anyone knows how many priests and nuns were killed in Central America by terrorists funded by the Iran-Contra criminals in the Reagan administration. Many of them were pardoned by Bush Sr. on Chritmas Eve 1992, and are now again employed in a Bush white house.

3. Dime also honors polio victims
the March of Dimes started to raise funds to find a polio vaccine, and it succeeded. That is why FDR's image is on the dime. To take it off is to dishonor all those who survived polio and those who worked to find a cure. This is a great argument to use if freepers wax poetic about the Great Liar.

15. I think that's the ticket.. We need several TV news pieces
with polio survivors interviewed and expressing their extreme dismay at attempts to diminish both their struggle and those of the Nation, as led by FDR, to control/eradicate polio.

That should shame these disgusting Repugs. I think this could well backfire on them. The same aging veterans that Bush is disenfranchising, are also the same cohort that REMEMBERS the fight to eradicate polio.

10. Well......
Let's replace a Repub on the coins or paper currency...Lincoln is on the penny and the $5 bill. George Washington is on $1 bill, although he was a Federalist, I think he might be closer to Republican? There's Hamilton on the $10. We have Cleveland on the $1000, but he's a Democrat, and since I have never seen him, I really don't care if they put Reagan on the $1000. Also, Eisenhower is on the $1 coin. I don't mind if they want to replace Ike with Ronnie. But FDR! They got to be kidding!

12. To be fair
I know thats not what conservatives do, but if we are going to change the image on a coin we must know more about the person being proposed. I can't imagine any rightwingnut opposing the complete disclosure of all papers relative to Iran Contra prior to putting reagan's mug on any coin. It would be a terrible shame if we put a man's face on an american coin who did something that would tarnish the country's image. What do ya think freeper lurkers? Reagan surely hasn't done anything to tarnish our image, so you want the coin change? Easy! Insist bush open up all documents relative to Iran Contra. What's that I hear? Your rattling minds changing?

I have no idea out of over 166K+ votes how 23% would vote for RR, but it just goes to show one how stupid some people can be.

18. Psychologically remove New Deal
That's why they want to get rid of FDR. Replace New Deal policies with Reagan policies in people's minds. They've already succeeded in destroying LBJ's Great Society, next is the New Deal. Hillary is right, they want to roll back the clock all the way to the days of the robber barons.

this will turn off even some of the staunchest Republican supporters. Just shows how incredibly petty and shameless this party truly is.

This idiotic non-issue helps the Democrats. While our troops get shot up in Iraq and the economy stagnates, the moron-in-chief busies himself with something with something so utterly ludicrous. What's their next useless project, change the laws to get Dubya's ugly mug on the penny?

with historian Doug Brinkley, a caller asked about the dime thing, and he responded that 'FDR stays on the dime, and that's that', or something close, pointing out that Nancy agrees with this.

Instead, I think the feds should print a 1.78 trillion dollar bill with Raygun's mug on it, representing the national debt increase under his administration, the largest in history by far, both in dollars and percentage increase (23.6%). Reaganomics indeed.

As far as I know, the Reagan administration set records for indictments of its officials. Even the Harding administration wasn't as tawdry.

Yet there's a concerted effort, led by Grover Norquest and his ilk, to treat Reagan as a god. I just wish that particular branch of the GOP would simply gather its jewelry, melt down any precious metals, and simply make an idol for itself to worship. JUST HAVE DONE WITH IT, and leave the rest of us out of it.

Here's mine:

Oh, no. FDR is on the dime because he had polio and supported the March of Dimes. I have not forgotten the children who were afflicted or the children who were spared. I do not expect you to forget, either. I know I will remember, come Election Day, any elected official who dare lay a finger on the FDR dime. Franklin Delano Roosevelt led this country through the Great Depression when "Brother, can you spare a dime?" was the catchword. We're going to need that dime.

Edited on Sun Dec-07-03 10:28 PM by hlthe2b
Here's my email to Congress:
As a medical epidemiologist who has worked on polio eradication in Indai, I am deeply offended at the current bill which seeks to replace the image of FDR on the US dime. While I have little problem with APPROPRIATE efforts to honor Ronald Reagan, this move would toss away the deep history behind the dime and the significant contributions made by Franklin Delano Roosevelt--both to polio and to the future of this country. I am so appalled that the sponsors of this bill seem totally unaware (or uncaring) to the fact that the FDR dime acknowledges the deep strides made to control the scourge of polio as well as to honor those who suffered (and continue to suffer) from it. I beseech you to educate your fellow Senators and Representatives in Congress and to halt these efforts immediately. To her credit, even Mrs. Reagan has spoken out against this move. One does not honor Reagan by dishonoring Roosevelt. I leave you with my favorite quote in hopes that it might guide your decision: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" (George Santayana).

History matters. Please don't add to our collective National ignorance nor a trend of dishonoring those who helped to make our country what it is today.

{of course I didn't define what I thought would be APPROPRIATE efforts to honor Reagan--LOL]
