Stop the Draft / Stop Bush
Edited on Sun Dec-07-03 11:28 AM by Eloriel
I have an idea.

Let's collect all the stories and rumors and other indications that we've seen over the last few weeks that a draft is coming after Bush gets re-elected all in one place (here) and then make them available to our candidates. Best would be if someone collected them (in the 4 paragraphs + link style we use at DU) and posted them on a website. That would be great --candidates and their staff could easily get the whole picture from that, and it'd be easy to post on the blogs, send in emails, etc. We could also just use the DU thread, but they can be pretty messy. Anybody up for this?

Bush will NEVER reveal that he plans a draft. We'll have to do it for him. And one of the best ways I can think of is setting our candidates on the job. But we have to get their attention and give them the "intelligence" to back it up.

Here's DemsWillWin's latest post with a Ted Rall column I haven't read quite yet.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=843554

And the Ted Rall column: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=127&ncid=742&e=7&u=/uclicktext/20031204/cm_ucru/acolddraft

So whadya say? Got links to add to the project? Somebody willing to make a "Just Say No to Bush and His Draft" page?

Eloriel

1. Hi, Eloriel
Several people in the last couple of weeks, including myself, have suggested the same thing with about as much response as your post is getting.
I'm with you on this, I think it needs to put out there beyond du and given the attention and coverage it deserves.
I don't think it would be that difficult to find links and sources, the bush* administration has gotten sloppy and complacent in advancing their agenda, almost a bold and in your face cockiness that begs to be exposed. Maybe this is the one issue that will make the people in this country sit up and take notice.

edited to add link to Selective Service Plan for 2004
http://www.sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html

which enumerates a lot of very scary plans. I can't take the time now to sift through, but if anyone wants to do it, there it is (and I know that this link has been provided in other threads).

4. That's good
but not quite what I had in mind. That site has all the news stories in the forum, which means someone (a busy aide) would have to sift through for the meat. I was thinking of doing the hard work of that for them -- So they have one place to go and it's all right there.

(I have to confess one of the reasons I'm asking for help with this is that I'm operating with one broken hand which severely cramps my style. LOL. I also may not have kept all the links I should have.)

2003 Iraq conquest, colonization on false WMD excuse
2003 $28 mil allocated perf plan
2003 DRAFT BOARD notice to recruit members, first ad in 20 + years, SCRUBBED
Nov. Zell Miller says we may need DRAFT
Nov. Troop article, Band sent
Nov CBO story – unable to sustain in Iraq past March 2004

6. I have been thinking the same thing
Many people I talk to with teen age sons I quite worried about this. I think this is potentially a very hot issue and can galvanize alot of support against Bush.

Question: Have any of the major Dem candidates addressed this issue at all?

is a collection of articles about lots of angles on this. We need a straightforward chronology to really convince people in one quick read.

10. Somebody, somewere, needs to get Bush on the record on this
Edited on Sun Dec-07-03 12:15 PM by Walt Starr
In some forum, somewhere, when Bush takes questions (yeah, I know, tought thing to do), somebody MUST ask this question:

"Will you pledge right now that you will not reinstate a draft for pre-emptive war?"

It'll take him by surprise and he'll have to say he won't answer or say no.

11. the more coverage this gets the better
just like the BBV.

The question must be asked loudly and often: How do you propose to ensure we have enough soldiers for all of our committments?

Rumsfeld, Powell, Jr, everyone needs to pinned down repeatedly. Not to mention Scotty-the-mouthpiece.

Someone said 91% of people between 18 and 29 opposed to the DRAFT being reinstated. This would knock Bush down into the low 40s or high 30s by November if we can get it out. I've e-mailed to many in the media and NOTHING except for Ted Rall so far.

If you can, go on annd PM me so I will have your email address (your PM is disabled so I cannot PM you). Then we can begin to converse.

No rush on the content I need to think about artwork first but I would like your input.

24. Excellent Idea.
Everytime I mention to a Republican that Bush will reinstate the Draft if re-elected, they immediately have the same response, "That will NEVER happen." It's like they have been coached or simply refuse to believe it.

Parents of 16 to 19 year-olds who vote Republican are very nervous about this.

Eloriel, you have an excellent idea! :hi:

26. Received this by email...This from DOD Arizona. New for 2004.

This from DOD Arizona. New for 2004.

>>> The following is the result of changes to Arizona law effective
January 01, 2004.

Selective Service Registration - Federal law requires that every male
United States citizen and male alien residing in the United States and
its territories must register with the U.S. Selective Service System
within 30 days of his 18th birthday. Beginning January 01, 2004,
Arizona law requires that by submitting an application for an original,
renewal or reinstatement driver license or identification card, male
applicants under 26 years of age must consent to registration with the
Selective Service as part of the application process. When submitting
an application for a duplicate driver license or identification card,
male applicants under 26 years of age have the option to consent to
registration as part of the application process.

Registering with Selective Service does not mean that you are joining
the military. Registration provides the federal government with an
accurate list of males who might be called to military service if a
return to the draft is authorized by Congress and the President.

If you are 18 to 25 years of age, registration information will
immediately be sent to Selective Service. If you are under 18,
information will be stored and automatically sent to the Selective
Service when you reach age 18. Selective Service will send you a
Registration Acknowledgment Card when your registration is complete.

For more information call Selective Service toll-free at 888-655-1825
