BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Three American soldiers were killed Thursday when their convoy was hit by gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades in northern Iraq, a military spokeswoman said.

The killings were further signs that an insurgency against American troops is not losing strength as Washington hoped after the deaths Tuesday of Saddam Hussein's sons Odai and Qusai.

V Corps spokeswoman Spc. Nicole Thompson said the soldiers, members of the 101st Airborne Division, were traveling in a convoy toward Qayyarah, 186 miles north of the capital, Baghdad, when they were at attacked. No soldiers were reported wounded and it wasn't known if any assailants were killed or wounded.

4. It was essential that they manufacture
some sort of military victory. No matter how they try to paint the situation as a success - with conditions gradually improving on the ground, the true evidence indicates otherwise. Bush is put in the position of begging for international assistance to help clean up the mess. After all his sneering at the UN, the threat of UN involvement worries those who have lucrative contracts to protect.

They needed to win a battle to improve PR and how convenient a time to release more damning revelations exposing lies in the SOTU speech.

And then of course, Clinton had to throw in his two cents. I just spoke to someone here where I work, who was sputtering with fury at Clinton, telling me that he had finally written off the '04 election due to democratic incompetence and conservative domination. On the other hand, someone who works at voter registartion said they were swamped with so many new registration forms they had to put in a new computer system.
We shall see.
