How does that wedge get driven in, in order to divide the Republican party?

I think it may be the only chance for significant change in the short term.

1. He is a conservative
I know what you are saying, and it is partly true. He isn't a classical conservative and he isn't a libertarian, but he is what conservatism has become in the year 2005. He is the logical extension of the philosophies of Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, Robert Novak and so on.

Is this real conservatism? Who knows. It is what the conservative movement has allowed itself to become, and we should not allow it to disengage itself from the crimes of the Bush administration.

2. Heh... let me share a message board exchange I just had:
Rex:

Hey, rightwingers... How does it feel to know that your great grandchildren will be thanking anti-superstition pro-humanity anti-racism anti-fascism visionaries such as myself?

Gets under your craw, doesn't it? In the past two centuries liberalism has freed slaves, given women the right to vote, and fed the hungry. I believe you act with such vitriolic hysteria because you KNOW that, in the end, liberalism is the virtuous path and ALWAYS wins, and that there's no place in an enlightened society for greed, misogyny, ethnicism, and irrationality.

Martavius:

Umm, Lincoln freed to slaves and the 15th amendment was ratified during the Lincoln/Grant administrations. Weren;t they both Republicans?

Rex:

Today's Republican Party is grotesque... I can't even call it a caricature of Lincoln's Party because caricatures at least have some bit of resemblance to the actual.

lsudicker:

Well I guess we could say the same thing about the Democrats.

Rex:

No, you couldn't because, frankly, you're not that articulate. :)

3. WTF do today's "conservatives" want to conserve?
Money? Natural resources? The constitution? They have happily trashed all of these and still have the balls to call themselves conservative. The only goal they have is to shitcan the middle class so their big bidness buddies can control all of the country's wealth.

4. He's a radical right wing republican. NOT a conservative
NOTHING he does fits with the 'conservative' ideology.

I say that here time and again, and people are so programmed to equate 'conservative' with RW radicals (which Rush has taught the country to do) that it seems a useless exercise.

5. He is a conservative. Look at Limbaugh, Robertson, Falwell, Santorum
and the rest of the hate spewing, bigots. On issues such as the environment, help for the poor, and equal rights, he is a conservative, all right. No question.
