ha-ha. Tennessee too redneck for Central Fla. redneck.
We really need to define the different stages of redneck, because even some right-wing rednecks are too redneck for our local right-wing rednecks. Here's the story:

A couple of years ago my daughter had a crush on a right-wing redneck boy. He seemed very polite and his mother did too so I gave the relationship my blessings. As it turned out, it was very short-lived, and not all by my doing. My daughter had some apprehension because the father was as right-wing as they come and she didn't know how I would respond to him. Well, it lasted a week because the boy didn't pass the test when he came to visit. My rules were very simple. Hand holding okay, nothing else. I said they could come and watch a movie in the family room, but it only took twenty minutes before they were in a lip lock. If they would go so far this early in the relationship when I was in the next room, I didn't think there was much hope that it would get better in the future. My daughter got a week restriction and I told the boy to call his father to take him home. I met the dad at the door when he came to collect his son. I can't remember what it was he was wearing, but I do remember thinking, "Whee, I dodged a bullet." He looked equally skeptical at me. I remember wearing a tee-shirt that had ethnic coloring.

The two kids never dated again, but mostly because my daughter said she lost interest once she discovered he was a lousy kisser. Of course, she didn't tell me this until months later. They still remained good friends, though, because he was a nice boy, according to her.

Anyway, 8 months ago the family left the area to go back to their home in Tennessee. Hard to believe our Republican county was not conservative enough for them. But now we've heard that they're coming back. Apparently they found Tennessee to be too redneck. Lots of hicks (their words) and they said the final straw was when a student brought a hunting rifle to school. Apparently they do that kind of thing up there.

So, if we had to categorize the different levels of redneck, what would they be? I don't even know where to begin. Who would be considered a liberal redneck these days?

1. I might be considered a
liberal redneck. I like NASCAR and ice cold beer. I drive a truck and enjoy puttering in the garden and yard. I cuss like a Sailor on occassion (since I was one once). If you look at me you'd say, yeah he's a redneck. But I have all the positive mental attributes that make me a flaming liberal. Church organizations can stay the fuck out of my and your life. They can also give up their tax exempt status. Our kids are dying needlessly in Iraq. A competent fiscal policy would include assistance for those who need it and a jaundiced eye at continuing corporate welfare. I could go on but ya'll get the point. To sum it up nicely: My heads in Mississippi but my hearts in the French Quarter.

2. How did we lose the battle of perception on the redneck thingie?
In my time rednecks were very independent. I guess we found them appealing because back in the 60s, everybody was anti-establishment for one reason or other. I just don't know how they suddenly became associated with the hate side of the confederate flag.

4. People like that live in a different country from me.
I don't share any of their values, beliefs, sttitudes, interests, or activities. They might as well be from North Korea, or the Moon, as far as my being able to relate to them as "Americans" goes.

Should we have just let the south secede after all? Look at all the trouble we would have saved.

Ah, yes: let slavery flourish, and African-Americans remain in chains, so "mwb970" could save him/her/itself some "trouble."

That's some admirable degree of "progressive" thought ya got going there...what a "liberal" you are...

7. What makes you think slavery would have flourished?
With the onset of television and the spreading of ideas, what makes you think the slaves wouldn't have organized and slaughtered the slave-holders in their sleep? If the rest of the country remained isolationist, who knows?

Frankly, I don't think you have any room to lord it over anyone, being from Blackwell & Taft country.

11. Will Rogers?
This goes back quite a few years, but I recall one of his quotes as:
"I'm not a member of any organized political party. I'm a Democrat!"

Would ole Will see things differently today? I kind of doubt it.

13. LOL I know a place he can live.
That's SUPER conservative and not considered "redneck."

Tell him to investigate west St. Louis county, Missouri. He'll see tons of "W" stickers on BMW's and Hummer H2's.

But, he'd better make sure that people there don't consider him "redneck" so tell him to make sure he has at least $1.5 million set aside for a custom built executive estate home, and enough for country club dues. Also, he should make sure his cars are no less than 2 years old and cost no less than $60,000.
