Don't expect a mass exodus of Republicans from the W fan club.
"Constitution? We don't need no stinkin Constitution!"

3. Well, not everyones support...
The July 20, 1944 assassination attempt against Adolf Hitler was not the act of a lone officer but ... the first of 17 assassination attempts against Hitler by the German Resistance ...
http://www.remember.org/6/hitler-assassination-attempt.html

Not that I am advocating such a thing, just adding to the discussion...Is that OK NSA?

8. He was popular with the German people up until about 1942-43
When the war turned in Staligrad...El Alemain (sp?)...and the declaration of war against America...people began to turn on Hitler. But by then, his power and authority was so entrenched that there was no way to stop him.

The die-hard Nazi's supported him to the end...and some, beyond that.

13. I fully support ...

I fully support the notion of assasinating brutal, blood-thirsty lying dictators.

4. Hitler had his people's support all the way to the bunker?
Why didn't he allow elections to continue?

Was he too modest to be able to endure masses of people expressing approval of him and his policies?

Was he concerned that his political opponents might have hurt feelings when they lost elections?

Did he decide that he didn't want his political opponents to suffer even from a small amount of embarrassment or pessimism?

23. Indeed it is, I've just never had a copy that would stay together. . .
The paperback version is so thick that the glue binding can't hold, it starts to fall apart. Some day, I'll buy a hardback copy to put in my book collection.

9. If you want to see an excellent film about the last days of
Hitler, rent Downfall. It is subtitled only, but it is so good. I could not help making comparisons. Even to the dialect, shaking hand and bad humour. Excellent, Excellent film.

20. I watched it recently.
Hitler turned on practically everyone. He wanted the German people to die with him because they hadn't been good enough to win the war for him. Amazing megalomania.

had the impact on me if I had not been watching what is going on here.

21. We watched it last night...
German subtitles, and very controversial in Germany. Most of the scenes originate in the bunker. Even the Hitler youth were with him up to the end. They were fighting for their Fatherland. (Homeland)

10. Right.
Because the Constitution interferes with somebody's idea of "god" ruling all else. The criminal Bush gang has ridden the "culture war" on the American people into power and those who support him do so above ALL else. After all, he was chosen by "god" to lead and lead us into hell, he will.

15. When I said "his people" I was not referring
to the German people, but rather his core Nazi supporters. My analogy is to the hard core Republicans (no I am NOT calling them Nazis). From Plame to torture to this NSA revelation, I don't think the hard core Repubs will ever turn on him.

24. "his people"= core supporters
Thanks for the clarification.

You and I can leave "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" off our reading lists. However, other people will apparently be reading it from cover to cover. It should keep them busy.

Sure a sizable part of the population supported Hitler. Word has is that you need 30%. The rest can be intimidated into compliance.

25. Smart people are very good at defending beliefs...
That they came to through stupid reasons. That's the problem. They'd rather defend stupid ideas they came to believe for stupid reasons then ask honest questions of themselves.
