The Flight of the Creative Class: The New Global Competition for Talent
Richard Florida

Economics professor Richard Florida writes that America needs to facilitate the emigration of talented artists, scientists, doctors, and other industry-leading thinkers so that their talents are realized in America, as opposed to countries abroad. This is the topic of his new book, "The Flight of the Creative Class: The New Global Competition for Talent." In it, the author makes the case that shifting societal values, the rising costs of urban living throughout America, and the enthusiasm displayed by those countries eager to foster a creative environment for the talented, have changed America's role in the global competition for talent.

Richard Florida is also the author of "Rise of the Creative Class," Washington Monthly's 2002 political book of the year. He is an economic development professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

to the debate about McCarthyism.

Same problem today as then.. there are fierce debates going on in this country but the politicians, dems and repugs, the ones with the power to change things refuse to take them on, or even debate it publicly.

I really like Johnsons theory of mandatory public service for everyone at age 18. Military, or Environmental, or Social.

Cities in the Wilderness: A New Vision of Land Use in America
Bruce Babbitt

Bruce Babbitt, former U.S. Secretary of the Interior during the Clinton Administration, talks about his new book, "Cities in the Wilderness: A New Vision of Land Use in America" at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In it, the author writes that America needs a new land use policy if it is to avoid the irreparable harm of urban sprawl and mass deforestation. Mr. Babbitt makes the case that perhaps the best way to preserve America's open spaces is to leave its control to local government with the considerations of national interest.

Bruce Babbitt served as Arizona Attorney General from 1975-1978 and as Governor of Arizona from 1978 - 1987. More recently he was appointed U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1993 - 2001 during the Clinton Administration.
