A little note from DU admin Skinner y'all should read...
...which appeared here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4866571&mesg_id=4869867

Skinner sez:

The more things change, the more Democratic Underground stays the same. Democratic Underground is not getting dumber or ruder or flamier or kookier or whatever. Democratic Underground is getting bigger.

All of the complaints in this thread are exactly the same complaints we have heard -- literally since day one:

There are too many trolls.
People flame too much.
All the good people are leaving.
We're not as intelligent as we used to be.
There's too much fighting.
There's too much name-calling.
There are too many kooks.
There is too much censorship.
I miss the old days.
There is too much Dem bashing.
There is too much lockstep Dem boot-licking.
Something has changed.
Etc, etc, etc.

I appreciate the fact that people care about Democratic Underground. And anything that will make all of our members think about their behavior and try to be positive DU citizens is a good thing. So, maybe, this thread might have a modest positive effect.

But I have to emphatically disagree with the underlying assumption of this thread, and every other thread like it: That there existed a time in the past when Democratic Underground was significantly "better" in any of these respects than it is now. That's just wrong.

There never was a DU Golden Age. Since the very first day of its existence, this place has always been filled with smart people and stupid people. Polite people and rude people. Oversensitive whiners and over-offensive haters. Group hugs and circular firing squads. Insightful analysis and kooky conspiracy theories.

All the good people have been leaving since January of 2001. And we keep getting new good people to fill their place. There is a natural ebb and flow, a cyclical nature to this place. People come and go. Problems flare up and fizzle out. DU is great when there's lots of news because we've all got a common purpose. It's usually a cesspool of flaming when there's no news, or when Dems are getting our asses kicked in the news, because our sense of common purpose is lost.

And through it all, people long for the mythical DU Golden Age, when the people were nicer and smarter, and there were hardly any trolls or flaming. LOL.

This place had basically no rules at all for the first year-and-a-half of its existence. You could call someone a "flaming mother-fucking asshole" and you wouldn't get your post deleted. We had flame wars all the time, barn-burners that were *way* uglier than the tea-parties we have now. You could post any ridiculous thing you wanted, and we'd let you do it. And that was perfectly fine back when the website was smaller. But the bigger it gets, the more we have to institute rules and enforcement to smooth out the rough edges. It sucks I know, but it seems to happen on just about every discussion forum.

The ratio of crap-to-quality on Democratic Underground is no worse than it ever was, and in many respects it is much better. But the absolute amount of crap is larger -- just like the absolute amount of quality is larger -- because the community is larger.

Here's why I think people will always believe the myth that there once was a DU Golden Age: 1) Because people are just like that, and always think "the grass is greener." And 2) because there is a natural change to perceptions after you spend time here. Allow me to explain.

When you first find Democratic Underground, the reaction is inevitably something like: "HALLELUJAH! I have found a community of like-minded people!" DU seems like a massive buffet of progressive opinion. You are so thrilled by all the good stuff here, you are so thrilled to have found a place unlike any other, that you can't help but feel good about it. It's that place you've been looking for all along. But spend enough time here, and that sense of novelty, of wonderment, of excitement will inevitably fade. You slowly realize that there are both smart people and dumb people here. You slowly realize that there are both nice people and rude people here. Your somewhat naive belief that building up your post count would buy you respect from everyone else turns out to be mistaken. You start to identify with the "who the hell are all these newbies?" crowd, and stop identifying with the newbies. You take the good for granted, and the bad just seems like an annoyance. And furthermore, when you try to lash out against the evil you perceive all around you, the moderators delete your posts. Democratic Underground inevitably loses some of its lustre. Some people get tired of all the bullcrap and leave. It's a normal process. But through it all, Democratic Underground doesn't change very much. Your perceptions change.

It is undeniable that DU is getting bigger, so there is more of the bad stuff. (But remember that there is also more of the good stuff, too.) It is undeniable that our rules are more stringent and there is more censorship than there used to be. (But remember that the point of the censorship -- AKA "moderating" -- is to get rid of the most disruptive stuff.) Overall, Democratic Underground has not changed that much. The percentage of postings that are stupid or rude is still roughly the same as it's always been. And the number of complaints and navel-gazing "what have we become?" threads about Democratic Underground itself stays relatively constant.

A word of advice for everyone reading this, which I'm sure nobody will take. The ignore feature is your friend. Use it. I wish I could.

Anyway, I've talked too long, and I'm sure nobody has even made it this far in my post. If you're still reading, you win a pony.

The good news is that we are always trying to come up with new ideas to encourage quality, and to help visitors separate the good stuff from the bad. We're working on some pretty cool changes right now. But I'll explain them in another thread sometime.

71. I ***WAS*** BANNED
Seriously.

Dunno why. Maybe it had something to do with my login name. Anyway, I can tell you quite seriously that Skinner is right. Things aren't much worse, and in many ways are better than they were then. The mods don't ban people on a whim (or maybe they do, but I don't see it).

Still, there are things that are manifestly worse: the sheer volume of "me too" posts, and title trolling for "Greatest" votes. Like this.

4. Funniest thread I ever found in the archives included a post from Elad or
EarlG. (can't remember which now) telling a long time, still here, DUer (not me) to go straight to hell and on the way shove their ridiculous opinion up their behind.

I laughed so damn hard!

Sorry, Skinner...gotta disagree with you on the "Golden Era!" You could NOT write comedy better than some of that stuff from the first year!

Nicest people during the first year, hands down: Crewleader, Roni and I think, SoCalDem....the rest of us could act like total jackasses...and it was a blast-

15. That overlooks the very real
-- yet very remote -- possibility that everyone on DU is a highly skilled intelligence agent, programed to spread disinformation to a non-existent left-wing. It also completely overlooks the possibility that there are only three people in the country, who have developed highly reproductive propaganda chips that simulate and stimulate the rabid debates on here. You, sir, may be playing right into that plan.

Most of the mods here to a good job at eliminating offensive posts and dumping repeat offenders.

My pet hate is the people who call anything but rigid agreement and a sea of bobbing heads "infighting."

People are going to disagree. It's how we educate each other.

26. ((((HUG))))Skinner
I had not read any of this stuff when I sent you my two emails today. You poor thing, you do such a great job here. I might have considered waiting had I known this was going on.

Just one more time let me say that I appreciate this place more than I can say. After 3+ years here I have been through all of those things including thinking of leaving and looking elsewhere. Like you said, there are problems everywhere so I always end up right back here and normally it takes me about 10 minutes before I wonder what is going on at DU. It is by far the best of all the political sites I have visited.

Thanks Will for posting this, it is exactly right from my perspective. Actually I have begun to use some of the inane flame wars for petty entertainment. I don't post in them I just amuse myself reading them. If that sounds harsh, well, some of it is pretty damned stupid. I would much rather watch them than be in them but I am certainly not above being in them now and then.

Skinner, you all are the best and thanks but no thanks on the pony. I have too many of them to begin with so I would like to donate mine to someone who does not have one. ;)

43. Every group I've ever been a member of, ...
in person or in cyberspace, has it's mythology about the Graden of Eden stage before the fall from grace when everything was perfect and all our children were well behaved and all got straight A's in school.

There are some people for whom this time period is the worst time period in all of history. Clearly they don't know their history. In spite of Geroge Bush, this period is one of the better periods that I remember in my lifetime. Of course I only remember back as far as Eisenhower's election, the McCarthy witch hunts, Viet Nam, and Watergate. But there was a time (for those who don't recall) that the religious right, spearheaded by radio evangelists, wielded so much power that they got the constitution amended to completely outlaw booze. Remember that? The fanatics aren't even close to having that much power today.

That's one reason I like to come here. When I read a post that makes me mad, I try to find out why, to build bridges with the other poster, so I can understand better how they perceive things. I found it interesting that the percentage of garbage and gems is the same-just more of both.

And I read the whole post. Skinner, you keep the pony, though. You deserve it! :)

The DU is a VERY big tent, and a large number of newbies cram themselves into it each day, hoping to have the world listen to their message. They don't realize the key word is TOLERANCE. Opposing views and a sometimes too-quick keyboard make for a lot of natural tension, and not everybody is willing to take it slow. I would agree the RATIO of intelligence to stupidity stays about the same within certain tolerances, but when there's so much traffic the advanced features of the board need to be switched of on a daily basis, you know the VOLUME is increasing sometimes too rapidly for many to handle. Sooner or later something will give somewhere. When it happens just move on to the next thread and try to remember what we're trying to do here.

Be nice. Take it easy. Practice tolerance. Consider your words BEFORE you hit the post button. And don't be at all surprised when somebody, somewhere, replies with a diametrically opposing viewpoint. It's their right. It WILL happen. And more often than not it will be a VALID viewpoint. Just like you're convinced YOURS was.

The Democratic Underground is a microcosm of the real world, and it ain't gonna change. We will be who we are. There's no need to go to war over it. As Harry Tuttle once said, "We're all in this together, kid!". Ain't it the truth!

Now, hows about a few verses of Kum-Bay-Yah, everybody?

74. This is all for the best
Keep the pony, Thank You! I would hope that people learn that there is no hiding from the twisted crap that Freepers and Trolls and Repukes use to deceive, distort, intimidate and manipulate everything from the media to the electoral process. They steal votes. They take milk from babies to add chemicals and sell it for more money. Democrats have been pounded of late by their sheer inability to believe that some people can be so low and use tactics that they consider below even the slimiest of human beings. But we have had right wing lunatic billionaires hacking away at our society for decades on behalf of their twisted ideas and ideals, and groups like the Swift Boat AHoles 8ucking with us for way too long. Learn how to wield the power or be used as a doormat.

One day we will live in a Repuke free society that respects all human beings, cherishes life and loves an unarmed God, but only if we direct our energy and anger and goodwill outwards. As soon as Democrats can say they spent thousands of hours working on a small town Board of Supervisors campaign by contacting and speaking with every member in that town, then we can start to claim stake to a personal rendition of the promised land at DU. The fact that there are actually increasing numbers of Dems who are doing just that makes it all better. Politics is a blood sport. Don't be one of the innocent victims that gets taken out on the sidelines. Fight! When you can quickly and effectively knock down the Freeper crap while enlightening others who then join you, then you won't complain about trolls or Freepers or Repukes. You'll take more of them out of commission when you encounter them. Is anybody still surprised or shocked by the depths of scumminess to which a Repuke will sink?

78. I read the whole thread and thought it was great!
Just lately I was thinking things and people around here seemed to be getting kind of hateful. I thought people would be alot happier lately with Bush's house of cards beginning to fall.

I've been on DU 1 year now and think it is a fantastic source of news, info, and thoughtful discussion. But, I do get a little tired of the same old boring threads that inevitably lead to flames.

But I have found most of the discussions to be very intelligent.

My pet peeves are with the people who keep using that tired old word "overgeneralize" and the ones who call you "whiners" just because you call them out on their rudeness.

The only deletion I had was when I called someone a "nameless faceless, moron, when they were very rude to me.
I just can't stand rudeness!!! They proceeded to say I was "disconnected from reality" but her post was deleted wayyyyy later than mine.

Oh I forgot to add that the people who try toooo hard to make you think they are a genius......they really irk me too.

It's like you said the good far outways the bad. Thanks again for the great post.

84. Small boards are like hunting and gathering societies
Behavior policing is by group consensus and is rarely formalized. Big boards are like large state-level societies, which need formal rules and specialized castes of enforcers just because the scale is bigger and more anonymous. And the percentage of assholes in both stays about the same.

Join me in flooding Washington! Louisiana groups have launched an effort to generate 300,000 e-mails demanding category 5 protection for New Orleans and Southern Louisiana. That means effective levees and flood control projects as well as comprehensive coastal wetlands restoration to give Southern Louisiana a critical storm buffer. Please take a second to help spread the word!

But if one were to be given to ANYONE, I think it should be ME!--in that I'm the first to point out that this seems to be (if memory serves) the very SAME article from Skinner I read some 6-7 months ago... proving his point about how nothing really changes, in a most subtly ironic yet time-warpy way!
So... when can I expect delivery?
And is he housebroken???
And can I get him in green??? With blue spots???

And now for something completely different...

99. Spend a decade in usenet newsgroups and that sense of wonderment...
....doesn't wear off nearly so fast ;-)

I've rarely experienced as safe a forum for civil debate.

The only way to eliminate passion from the debates would be to replace passionate people with bots, and we'd all be poorer for it. No political movement succeeds without passionate people.

Of course, no political movement would succeed without people thinking ahead, way ahead to the consequences of decisions and positions.

Perhaps I've not been here so long as to disassociate myself with the newbies. Perhaps as a Canadian I will always be and feel somewhat outside DUs mainstream.

But then, there are a lot of people outside the mainstream: the poor, the hungry, the victims...

Thanks for giving us all a safe place to talk.
