College Atheist Group exchanges bibles for porn magazines-LOL..
A group of atheists at UTSA was asking students to exchange bibles for porn magazines Wednesday, and that has made some religious leaders angry. News 4 WOAI first broke the story at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

At a Wednesday night church service, The Bible is the bond between believers, but on the UTSA campus a group of students were calling scripture, smut.

“We consider The Bible to be a very negative force in the history of the world,” student Ryan Walker said. He is part of a student group calling itself the "Atheist Agenda."

Club members were on campus asking students to exchange religious materials for pornographic magazines like Black Label and Playboy.>>>>snip

1. As Mark Twain said, "The bible has...a wealth of obscenity."
"The bible is a book with some beautiful poetry, a blood stained history, a wealth of obscenity, and upwards of ten thousand lies." - Mark Twain

5. ahhh..ok, now that I see the picture...
I see that the outrage of the fundies was somewhat justified.

I still would have rather seen a religion to philosophy comparison than a smut to smut comparison, myself.

7. In the Vietnam war era we set up a "people's army" booth next to
the marines booth as guerilla theater. We had real free speech zones at California colleges at those times so to me philosophy books don't have the same humorous impact as smut for smut.

Besides at the University I went to I took a upper level philosophy courses which included religion and philosophy and those books were long, complex, laborious and not at all humorous.
Maybe sci-fi books, comics or fantasy books, but I still like the effort.

8. right. I support the effort, but I think the "smut" smears both groups,
I think they MEANT to smear the fundies, but they inadvertantly smear themselves, too.

I guess I dont' think religious texts and porn are in the same category...oh, unless its because they both get people shouting "oh, god!".

;)

10. The bible covers an amazing amount of the whole arc of human existence,
which includes smut, violence, lies and mistreatment of people generally.
but it also includes compassion, altruism, courage, honesty and integrity...which are also part of the arc of human existence.

14. Well, it does have some pretty hot scenes in it.
Not as naughty as the ones in the bible, but still pretty good. One man's smut is another man's poetry.

11. They should have exchanged them for science books or...
something else that is actually enlightening. Exchange the dark force for something showing people the light.

2. That's a nice upgrade
The articles are more factual and the pictures clearer. Lots less violence, too.

Plus you have a chance of actually meeting the people talked about, unlike in the bible.

3. well...the only thing I'd say is that I don't think atheists should
have used porn...only because it reinforces incorrect negative stereotypes the fundies ALREADY have.
T'were it I, I would have made the exchange be bible/constitution or bible/philosophy or bible/ayn rand or something.

Although I am laughing at the cartoonish outrage likely to be expressed by the fundies, I think the atheists are selling themselves short, here. Atheism is not pornography, but a different point of view.

I realize that wasn't the intent, but that was the first thing I thought: the fundies believe their bible to be a sacred text (although oddly they seem to stop short of actually reading or understanding it), but it makes it appear as if atheists are saying porn is THEIR sacred text, which is not the case.

17. Their sign specifies "religious scripture," not bible
which leads to a very interesting philosophical point.

What could be "literally" exchanged ?

18. I noticed that too.
I wonder how much of a firestorm would be caused by a "Porn for Koran" drive by the Anti-Islamist Imperialism league.
