1. What state does Murtha represent?
My hat's off to the voters who put Murtha in office.

2. Pennsylvania. He's the first senior lawmaker asking for withdrawal.
He is a Vietnam Marine vet, and is supposedly very close to military brass.

4. Thank you for the information
Do you suppose he took his cue from his military friends? I've heard some of them feel that Bush is destroying the military.

Om Hari Om
Shanti Shanti Shanti

17. Umm, not actually true...my Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey has been calling
for immediate troop withdrawal for months now. Don't recall the proposed resolution #'s, but she had a couple of press conferences and called for it...the MSM ignored it then, would only be covered on CSPAN.

Guess now that its "cool" to criticize the war and Bush, then its seen as ok....I guess when a Grandmother who was once on welfare asks for it that isn't as "cool" as when a male vietnam vet marine asks for it....

Not to be complaining, I'm glad to hear as many voices as possible...I just love and will always appreciate that my Congresswoman Woolsey has done this consistently and early-on.

21. I wish I could be proud of my Congresswoman. She is in lockstep with the
Shrub. I am going to actively work to get her out of office in 2006.

22. Who is going to be her challenger? I've decided next year to donate to
every challenger of Repukes in districts that can be taken on. I know the area you are from well....went to school at East with lots of friends from Rye and West Chester.(My first love in College was from Rye)

Anyway, I am looking forward to the karma coming back at each of these lockstep Repukes when the truth all comes out....And it will come, it always does....

20. Possibly, but it's to any incumbent's benefit for the war to end before 06
Or at least appear to be in the processing of ending in 06, now that the majority of voters realize that the war was a mistake.

Murtha may be sincere. Hegel may be sincere. That's not the point. The point is that there's a huge political benefit in opposing the war now, and we as voters need to step back and ask whether we're okay with the overall performance of these elected officials. Is it okay to make really, really, bad votes that damage the nation and the world, if the office holders say "I made a mistake" long after the damage is done? How much bad government are we willing to forgive?

Everybody who voted for the war in the first place wants it off the table before 06. Dems who voted for it don't want to have to explain whether their vote stemmed from naivete, incompetence or the ugliest kind of political calculation. GOP candidates do not want to have to do that either, especially since any discussion of the war means they will still have to support the war or lose most of their base. If everybody in both parties blames the intelligence for their votes, then everybody gets to have supported for the war when it was popular, and demand the end of the war when it was unpopular - - without having to pay any price for their first vote.

Nobody in the media will call them on it.

And Republicans like Hegel will be able to distance themselves from their vote the same way that Democrats like Murtha will be able to distance themselves from their vote. All this effort into making Smirk radioactive will not necessarily translate into Dem victories in 2006 or beyond.

10. And as a good Marine
He is adapting, improvising, overcoming. He will not stay the course after he has determined where the course will take us. And I hope he is chatting with the military brass in Washington and getting some hints on how to adapt. If only cheney and bush had served honorably in the military we (and they) might not be in this pickle.

11. Well good for him then.
I want everyone who voted for authorization of force to speak out loud and clear now. They need to show they can't be intimidated by Bushco's rhetoric.

8. Yay! About time that somebody in power did.
Not that it will do much good, for the rest of the Dems won't get behind it due to either political or finacial concerns, or both. The 'Pugs won't get behind it because they just love the war.

But I'm glad that somebody is finally standing up and saying what needs to be said in the corridors of power. Hopefully this will expand and continue.
