Can someone explain Chalabi/Iran/neocon connection?
I don’t get something and it bothers me.

I smell a rat.

Chalabi was the Iraqi ex-pat who told the neocons what they wanted to hear.
His lies were then passed on by Judy Miller and the NYT, and Cheney, and others as the reason to go to war.

He is the father of the idea that we would be greeted as liberators. Well, three years later....IED’s and anarchy.

He has been investigated as possibly a spy for Iran.

Here is what I don’t get. The neocons hate Iran. If all had gone well we would have been in Iran by now.

But if this guy is an Iranian spy why did the neocons welcome him last week as a hero?

Something is fishy in neocon-land.

Either the Chalabi-Iran connection is a red herring and the neocons know it.
But then, why float an Iran connection and have an FBI investigation of Chalabi?

Or, Chalabi is involved with Iran and so are the neocons!
What could that be about?

Either way a: Chalabi:necon:Iran connection is counter intuitive.

Anyone have any ideas or theories as to what they are really doing?

>Chalabi suspected of giving U.S. secrets to Iran
Friday, May 21, 2004 Posted: 9:57 PM EDT (0157 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. intelligence officials on Friday said Ahmed Chalabi, a member of the Iraqi Governing Council with ties to senior Pentagon officials, gave intelligence secrets to Iran so closely held in the U.S. government that only "a handful" of senior officials know them.

They also said there is evidence Chalabi met with a senior Iranian intelligence official described as a "nefarious figure" who has played a direct role in activities against the United States. This information was first reported on CBS News.

Meanwhile, government sources said the FBI is investigating who may have passed on the classified information to Chalabi.<

3. He is Iraqi.
He was in Jordan, as he was in the United States because Saddam would have got him if he stayed in Iraq.

I don't know why the neocons still stick by him, except I know that many of them never did accept that he had been spying for Iran despite the CIA finding. The power to cherry pick CIA information still includes the power to throw out and disbelieve whatever is inconvenient, and the neocons have been doing that for a long time.

Also, as Ariana Huffington stated in a column this morning, Chalabi is a slick polished speaker--a snake oil salesman of the highest order. He fits right in with the neocons, and is just as trustworthy.

2. He has the goods on them about something..I personally think he knows how
they pulled off 9-11. He may also just have been passing info to Iran that these nutballs wanted passed to Iran. I think he has them by the VERY, VERY SHORT hairs.

4. I think that Chalabi has maintained his hypnotic hold on the neocons.
He really is one of them, after all. Con-man. Thief. Hero-in-error (LOL).

They probably believe that he's simply playing the Iranians in order to secure the Iraqi throne for himself (and for his American paymasters).

Of course, the neocons are nothing if not fools. But Chalabi is an even greater fool and will no doubt pay for his arrogant bluster with his life.

5. There are undercurrents in Iran...
...just as there are here.

We used to back the Shah, who was overthrown.

Chalabi is an Iraqi expat until recently, someone who would like to be in power there (and is on the way with US sponsorship).

Maybe Chalabi is engaged with those in Iran who used to be in power and would like to be again.

That's the only thing I can think of.

10. I read the second article and that seems to say
that the US/Iranian denunciations are a sham and posturing- while they both support terrorists, in this case the article referred back to Bosnian Muslims, because both are anti- Israeli.

The problem is that in this current model, the neocons would not align themselves with Iran, sub rosa, because the neocons are seen as being strongly pro-Israeli.

BTW- does any this ever make anyone wonder what the heck we are doing in the ME at all? The place is so convoluted, with such historic and contemporary twists and turns in agenda's that even with a score card our linear, western-style, thinking is at a disadvantage.

>"...diverting world public opinion from Washington's full-scale support for Israeli-sponsored state terrorism and for terrorist activities against those countries which oppose U.S. domination...''

But as the Dutch report shows, at the very time that an Iranian official uttered these words, the US was in fact providing full-scale support for *Iranian-sponsored* state terrorist activities against the Bosnian Serbs. And it was the Serbs who opposed U.S. domination. <

9. He's no genius.
That bit of theatre over his Iranian connections didn't buy him any credibility in Iraq.

"We are heroes in error. As far as we're concerned we've been entirely successful. That tyrant Saddam is gone and the Americans are in Baghdad."

If I'm in the Iraqi resistance and I had never even heard of Ahmed Chalabi, that quote tells me all I need to know.

11. how about this: War between CIA and Chalabi, and Tenet lost!
and thus distance themselves from him, maybe even throw him in jail and throw away the key over in Iraq, because Chalabi had either let them/him/the CIA down, or knew too much about Tenet and Co.

So what we may be seeing is that Tenet attacked Chalabi, the neocons loved Chalabi, and Tenet lost!! He stepped down and Chalabi may be the next prime minister of Iraq- he not only survived with the help of his little furry neocon pals- but he gets what he has always wanted---to rule Iraq, while the neocons get their puppet. Except Chalabi may not be that easy to control.

Chalabi accuses Tenet of spurring intelligence probe
FBI investigating source
of damaging leak to Iran

>Chalabi, a former member of the Iraqi Governing Council, made the accusation after President Bush announced that Tenet was stepping down as CIA director for personal reasons.

Tenet’s announcement came amid new storms over intelligence issues, including an alleged Defense Department leak of highly classified intelligence to Chalabi
Chalabi lashed out at Tenet, saying the effects of his policies toward Iraq over the past years “have been not helpful to say the least.”

“He continued attempting to make a coup d’etat against in the face of all possible evidence that this would be unsuccessful,” Chalabi said. “His policies caused the death of hundreds of Iraqis in this futile efforts.” <

13. Chalabi's Shia/Iranians are Shia
When sunnis took over, the well-connected Shias left.. Some went to Iran, and then to the US. Chalabi was part of the Iraqi exile community that was hoping, plotting to get back to Iraq and "reclaim" what was rightfully theirs (Think Miami Cubans..the old ones who were pro-Batista)..

Chalabi knew that he could only accomplish this if he could con the US military into helping..

we know the rest:(
