On anecdotal right wing hate and meanness
Lately, I seem to be picking up a lot of second hand account of right wing meanness. For example;

- Leticia Van De Putte, TX State Senator, reports about being told to her face that if "they (the Texas Dem Senators) were going to act like Mexicans, they were going to be treated like Mexicans."

- Someone I talked to last night is a nurse at the local state mental hospital. She said she had a conversation with a Doctor there about rumored cutting of services and closing of state mental hospitals in the 04-05 fiscal year. In the course of the conversation, she said she asked the doctor if "they" (the decision makers) were Republicans. She said the doctor said yes and he/she then told her of a meeting he/she was in with several Republican lawmakers about cutting services. Someone at the meeting asked what they would do about the mentally ill. Someone else at the meeting said they could "shoot them".

I've heard other similar accounts in the last few weeks, but these are the ones that have bothered me the most of late.

Of course, if you confront the right wing about these things they deny it vehemently. I kinda think if they have the guts to say it in private, they should have the guts to say it publicly. But then, the right wing are like roaches. Turn on the light and they scurry away as fast as they can.

I'm sure if you start listening, you'll hear similar anecdotes. I'm wondering if anyone else is hearing the same kind of second hand anecdotes.

1. A winger in my office who routinely listens to OxyC Limbo
will occasionally and not so quietly make references to 'non-producers' who should be allowed to die off. He seems like the type to me who would rush* that process along if he could, rather than just 'allowing' it to happen.

2. Some Public examples
The First Lady of Maryland advocating that Brittany Spears be shot.

Pat Robertson saying (on air) that the State Department should be nuked.

Then, of course, there is the famous Ann Coulter proposition that there should be public executions so liberals know they can be killed.

Conservatives seem to be more brazen these days. That's why I fear the 2004 elections will be a nasty, dirty, no-holds-barred fight for the very soul of the country.

3. Right Wing = Hatred
That's a global truth. Just look at right wingers around the world, all of them are obsessed with hatreds of anything or anyone different than them.

Right Wing = Hatred, pure unadulterated vicious bitter irrational

And when they get power, they act on their obsessions.

The wingnuts are chipping away at the institutions and values that in the US were set up to prevent them from acting on their impulses.

4. Yesterday...
I went to lunch with my friend and her mom at a Mexican food restaurant. My friend's mom, whom I adore and call 'mom'--a substitute for my evil, wingnut mom, told me about friends of theirs (whom I've met) who adopted two children--they went to this same restaurant, and a lady in a booth near them said, "Look, those people have two nigger babies!" The man got up and took his family out in disgust. Of all the places I've lived, I've only heard the word, 'nigger' used here in Salt Lake City, land of the white-wing Republicans.

7. An addendum
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 10:17 AM by PATRICK
Supposedly our local hate radio Clear Channel hit man "exiled" from New York, has taken his tender sensibilties to Salt Lake City. Bob Lonsberrry. If you hear him let us know if he is "turning a new leaf" or whining about his journalistic martyrdom in the land of the sane.

Just as I predicted(an easy one). Clear Channel moved its asset and rewarded him.

The flocking of buzzards.

8. Just remember
Republican does not equal right wing. I mention this because much of my anecdotal expereince lately has been with republicans who are ready to dump Bush. Remember, we'll need republicans to win in 2004, find opportunitites where you can to tell them about your favorite dem candidate(s).

9. I have a theory
about why right-wingers are so vicious, and full of hate. They hate and fear the one thing they can't control, themselves. I think they act out of such extreme self-hatred, which they can't admit to themselves, that they lash out at everything and everone else.

Look at their attitudes about gays. Why such irrational, vicious hatred toward another group of people? I suspect that they must harbor such deep sexual conflicts, that they are repressed sexually, and target others, gays, unwed moms, anybody who they feel must be having sex that they don't allow themselves.

Same thing about their unwillingness to fund social programs that benefit others...someone mired in self-hatred simply is not capable of understanding people who care about their fellow man. These are sad, bitter, self-loathing people, who act from hate and fear, and who can only think of making everyone else as miserable as they are.

10. I believe your theory is very truthful.
A person who does not love themself is incapable of feeling love for others. They do not understand compassion - maybe they've never been shown it. Maybe they can't muster up compassion for themselves and their personal faults, either.

People loathe, hate, and fear what they cannot control. Bill Bennett hates vices, and how many does dear Bill have? Well, gambling for one. Who knows what else. Rush hates drug users. Well, we all know now that Rush is a huge junkie. The list goes on. Perhaps that's why the hypocrisy of the far right seems so clear to us. Sad that they cannot see it themselves.
