18. Yahoo - Democrat Leads in Va. Governor's Race
9 minutes ago

Democrat Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine pulled ahead of Republican Jerry Kilgore on Tuesday with a quarter of precincts counted in the race for Virginia governor, a contest that was closely watched by political analysts for signs of the public's mood ahead of next year's midterm elections.

The races for governor this fall in Virginia and New Jersey saw record-breaking, mean-spirited campaigns. Elsewhere, New York and a few other major cities selected mayors.

With 25 percent of precincts reporting, Kaine led with 248,535 votes, or 52.6 percent, over Kilgore's 214,382 votes, or 45.3 percent. In the days leading up to the election, polls had the race too close to call.

Statewide ballot referendums put gay rights before the voters in Maine and Texas, while several government-overhaul measures on the ballot in California were seen as a referendum on GOP Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who campaigned hard for them.

31. Nothing new in VA
The Lt. Gov. doesn't have much power. In any case, Kaine's bigger task will be the same as Warner's, to deal effectively with the Republican legislature.

32. on the upside
the Lt. Governor is just a figurehead in VA, like in most states. the only downside is a Republican with name recognition in 2009. And the fact that it's always sad when a republican is elected.

On the bright side, local news reporting a number of defeats for incumbent Repug delegates.

40. My belief - that is in the past year the far religious right was so
emboldened to push issues - esp the Schaivo issue - that folks on the fence started to pay attention, and think "these folks don't represent me." For a long time they (far religious right) framed their messages in candy coating that sounded reasonable to moderates... but the past year seems to have shown the beginning of a "decloaking" (in the sense of demonstrating that these are extremists who wish to do much worse than their carefully moderated language suggested.) I expect more and more extreme folks to be turned back at the poll.
