Evolution in the bible, says Vatican, News Com Australia, November 7, 2005
THE Vatican has issued a stout defence of Charles Darwin, voicing strong criticism of Christian fundamentalists who reject his theory of evolution and interpret the biblical account of creation literally. Cardinal Paul Poupard, head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, said the Genesis description of how God created the universe and Darwin's theory of evolution were "perfectly compatible" if the Bible were read correctly.

His statement was a clear attack on creationist campaigners in the US, who see evolution and the Genesis account as mutually exclusive. "The fundamentalists want to give a scientific meaning to words that had no scientific aim," he said at a Vatican press conference. He said the real message in Genesis was that "the universe didn't make itself and had a creator".

This idea was part of theology, Cardinal Poupard emphasised, while the precise details of how creation and the development of the species came about belonged to a different realm - science. Cardinal Poupard said that it was important for Catholic believers to know how science saw things so as to "understand things better".

His statements were interpreted in Italy as a rejection of the "intelligent design" view, which says the universe is so complex that some higher being must have designed every detail.

9. This Pope is trying to take the church out of politics. As
to the statement he made on creation - he is siding with those of us who accept the idea of creation/evolution being viewed from two different sides. It is kind of like the Chicago Fire witnesses that told different stories because they were in different positions at different times. My guess is he will hold practicing Catholics to the rules of the church - abortion, divorce, etc. - and end the interference in politics as to the decisions of other religious

5. It's surprising, but not THAT surprising...
there WAS a time, way back, when the Vatican sponsored and encouraged scientific study and exploration.

LATELY, I think this religion vs. science thing is more a product of american ignorance and laziness than religion itself. -JJ

8. There are also aliens in the bible too
I wonder what Cardinal Poupard has to say about that part?

Genesis 6

1 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.
3 And the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” 4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

10. I just have to share a "theory" with you all!
I don't know how many of you remember a radio Evangelist named Kathryn Kuhleman. She was very popular and was on the air up until she died ( sometime in the late 70's, early 80's.) She also had a Healing Ministry, and I was blessed to have seen her in Ny City at a convention in 1970. I heard her explain her theory on the radio one night, and I've never forgotten it! She said that it is possible to believe in both Creationism, and Evolution. It happens in the Bible, in Genesis Ch.1 between verses 26 and 28. She explained that to God, there is no time, ie ,one year is like a thousand to Him. In the verses up to vs, 26, He creates the universe etc.ect....... then He creates ALL of the animals of every kind, (could have been many pre-historic species of all kinds).... Now if you read very carefully verse 28, there's a KEY WORD there. He creates man and woman in His own image to go and ****RE-POPULATE ****** the earth. How can one re populate, if it wasn't already populated once before???!!!!!! There could have been a whole population of cave men and women and Dinosaurs etc. that were destroyed by some cataclysm!! FOOD FOR THOUGHT???
