When he held the championship trophy he said, "this is for Venezuela".
Chavez is also more on the ball. Guess who my bet is for?

14. good PR, but there are other ways of seeing this
http://www.counterpunch.org/zirin05172005.html

I work in a school, and never, ever say the pledge

kids ask me why, and I say it's because we're a free country, and people died for us NOT to have to do it

some have started to refuse to say it now

17. well, yeah..
but at the same time, I suppose the argument could be made that these guys are able to make obscene amounts of money, and have far better lives than they would if they didn't play here, so they should show some respect... I typically don't like forcing anyone to do anything, (and as an atheist and an anti-nationalist, the pledge is verboten for me) but I also admire sportsmanship and respect for the traditions of the sport.

18. traditions like putting "under god" into the pledge?
that's some long standing tradition.....

don't mean to bum anybody's trip....I'm just googling around

I hate politicizing sports, almost as much as I hate politicizing criminals, heh

or is it the other way around?

I'm sure the pugpukes can/will have it both ways

meanwhile.....SOXXXXXXX RULE!!!!!

15. uh oh time? I was afraid of this, from the Trib
Hugo Chavez, Part II

Tribune
Published October 13, 2005

Ozzie Guillen's recent appearance on Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's radio show didn't go over well with those countrymen who interpreted it as an endorsement of the controversial leader. Guillen made an effort Wednesday to set the record straight.

"I like the man," he said. "I don't like his ideas, I don't like the way he is, and some misunderstand what I want to say, like they always do.

I feel good right now because I know my country is happy talking about baseball. They're not talking about politics or crime or what's happening in the country. What I say about Chavez, I say I like the man because he works hard, he says what's on his mind and he loves his country."
