Bush Is in No Hurry on Katrina Recovery

The president's go-slow approach is called a recipe for chaos, even by fellow Republicans.

By Peter G. Gosselin, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — Almost two months after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast and a month after promising in a nationally televised speech to help rebuild the region "quickly," President Bush has settled on a cautious, piecemeal approach that even many members of his own party fear will stall reconstruction and sow economic disarray.

Bush has made highly publicized trips to Louisiana and Mississippi on average of once a week since the storm, but the administration has yet to introduce legislation for two of the three proposals the president highlighted during his September speech from New Orleans.

In the case of the third proposal, $5,000 accounts to help workers left unemployed by the hurricane, an administration-drafted House bill would provide aid for fewer than a quarter of the jobless.

Despite mounting evidence that Washington is having trouble putting to use most of the $62 billion in emergency funds approved by Congress so far, the president has resisted appointing a recovery coordinator or further detailing his vision of how to tackle rebuilding. In interviews last week, he explained that he wanted state and local officials to act first.

(snip - much more)

As Republican Jesus says,

(This is a reference to the infamous pork-laden Transportation Bill - read more about that here:

Moral to the story - it's not that the GOP doesn't want to give out money for projects, they just want them to be useless projects that benefit only their rich cronies and slimy GOP pols.)

1. He wants the money for his illegal war. Plain and simple.
Pushing the recovery costs back to local levels frees up federal funds for Bush's war. Thus the people of those states pay over and over--in loss, in recovery, and for the war.

Speak truth. It is not just about him not caring. It is about the cost of an illegal war.

2. I agree. It's also, according to the article, about him placating his
base. They want the money for themselves, and they see no reason to help poor Democrats. Fiscal responsibility, they say - with a blind eye to what this Administration has done to destroy the financial stabiity and future of the country with the tax cuts, pork-laden bills passed by the GOP-owned Congress, and above all, the illegal war.

". . .has resisted appointing a recovery coordinator or further detailing his vision of how to tackle rebuilding. . .".

Silverspoon doesn't have a vision on how to get his hands on a bag of chips! He's never built or rebuilt anything in his life. He just ruins things.

6. Oh yes. And given his propensity to appoint clueless cronies notable only
for their mindless "loyalty" to himself, the chances of actually choosing a manager that could handle the vast organization required for effective rebuilding seem remote at best.

I really think * doesn't even SEE those traumatized, homeless people. They matter to him less than dirt.
