Guys at a Food Lion asking for money to help a "Christian Charity"...
I live in the south... So I expect people to flaunt their religion in order to try to seem honest and decent. And I expect they're too dumb to realize that to me, it just makes them look like criminals...

I had to laugh when leaving the Food Lion yesterday. Two guys were set up with some table, "Would you like to donate to our Christian charity?"

I looked them straight in the eye and said, "Nope... and selling it as 'Christian' doesn't help..."

They didn't know what to make of me.

1. Short, sweet, to the point
And then walk away. No sense being needlessly antagonistic.

3. "A Christian charity"?
The real ones have names and meet the financial disclosure laws.

By the way, the Moonies' fronts like to present themselves as "a Christian charity," "an international Christian youth group," "a philosophical debating society," or anything else except what they really are.

The silliest one I ever found was an earnest young woman in downtown Portland who wanted me to sign "a petition for chastity."

I tried to get her to explain what she expected to accomplish by that, and I could see the panicked look on her face. I finally got her to admit that she was a Moonie and gave her a hard time about working for an organization that will never admit its true identity.

I pointed out that Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Services, and the United Jewish Appeal don't hide their affiliations, so what was wrong with the Unification Church that it always hid its identity, especially when raising money?

She was looking visibly distressed when I left. She was young enough to be a second-generation Moonie, and I hope I made her think.
