47. Actually it says a lot:
Like this: "But people close to the Pentagon said on Tuesday that Mr. Rumsfeld’s account appeared to be at odds with that of Ms. Rice who told the New York Times that she had devised the new structure with Mr. Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, the secretary of state, and Dick Cheney, the vice-president."

Per the links posted to MSGOP, FT, Crossfire quote, etc.

Comdi has trouble telling lies, she shakes a lot. (For those who don't 'understand English', as RumDum puts it, there is always body language.)

I'd like to see video of him snapping at the FT reporter. At least a photo, fangs and all?

22. Transcription of Begala's comments re: yesterday's FT story
Begala during the opening "political alert": "Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld tells today's Financial Times that NSC head Condoleeza Rice was not telling the truth when she said the new plan giving her a larger role in Iraq policy was devised in collaboration with Mr. Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld also blasted Dr. Rice for briefing the New York Times about the reorganization which was in a classified memo. In other news, two more of our soldiers died yesterday in Iraq and pResident Bush's* team at home seems to be in disarray. Mr. Bush* needs to fire Dr. Rice and Secretary Rumsfeld and his deputy Paul Wolfowitz. They're the architects of a disaster and yet they are worrying about protecting their turf and attacking each other when they ought to be protecting our troops and attacking terrorists."

Tucker Carlson: "It's pretty embarrassing when a fight like this plays out on the pages of the Financial Times. I have to say, in Secretary Rumsfeld's defense, he was out of the loop and he completely admitted it. Unlike most bureaucratic infighters, who say 'no, I knew all along,' he said, 'actually, I had no idea.' He said to a reporter, 'don't you understand English? I said I was out of the loop.' So he gets points for directness and candor."

Begala: "For directness and candor. I'm wondering why the pResident has as his National Security Advisor someone who the Defense Secretary says didn't tell the truth."

Carlson: "Well, it's more complicated than that but I would just say, bottom line, it's the pResident's policy so if you don't like the policy in Iraq, hold the pResident accountable for it."

That's it, folks! Nothing really too dramatic, if you've already read the Financial Times story.

25. Read the article about Rumsfeld in ATLANTIC MONTHLY
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 03:51 PM by JasonBerry
The latest Atlantic Monthly has a great article looking at Rumsfeld's past. Interesting stuff and very well done. Nixon despised the "interference" of Rumsfeld in Vietnam strategy. Rumsfeld was supposed to be a domestic policy adviser, but was outspoken, too often, as a dove. Maybe a little of the OLD Rummy is returning. He was always considered a moderate-liberal Republican in the Nixon-Ford years....I've always wondered what happened for him to embrace the neocon line on foreign policy.

34. Facts are facts
I thought the article was interesting in that it showed the CHANGES of Rumsfeld. There was nothing to trust about the article. I remember very well Rummy being a dove in those years. When he toyed with the presidency in 1988, Republicans saw him as the old Rockefeller wing of the party. That's just the truth. It's the CHANGE that's so interesting and how so few ever talk about it.

White House Seeks to Minimize Iraq Differences With Rumsfeld
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/10/08/international/middleeast/08CND-RUMS.html?ex=1066276800&en=9234d7e6cbdbc4f0&ei=5062&partner=GOOGLE

"The White House sought today to play down differences with Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, who voiced a rare public complaint on Tuesday after being left in the dark about a change in the handling of postwar Iraq."

-snip-

"In an interview in Colorado Springs on Tuesday with The Financial Times and other European news organizations, Mr. Rumsfeld said neither President Bush nor Ms. Rice had told him in advance of the new entity.

The fact that Mr. Rumsfeld was not informed is puzzling at first glance, since he and Ms. Rice are both members of the National Security Council, whose chairman is the president."

-snip-

"Ms. Rice said over the weekend that she had conferred with Mr. Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Vice President Dick Cheney about setting up the new entity. But her account seemed at odds with Mr. Rumsfeld's recollection. He told reporters that he did not recall the change being discussed. "I wouldn't know how to comment on it," he said.

At one point, when the interviewer persisted, the secretary lost his patience. "You don't understand English?" Mr. Rumsfeld said. "I was not there for the backgrounding," a reference to the briefing given to The New York Times."

Wait for the WH to dispel any nonsense that there is trouble between Condi and Rummy. Bush is in trouble and this doesn’t make him look like he has a handle on his people (read Rumsfeld).

Everyone should watch FRONTLINE on Thursday (as they say…check local listings). It’s about Iraq and how we are doing so far. Should be interesting.

41. Hint from Dana Priest at WaPo
Arlington, Va: Would you agree the recent 'operational-ization' of the NSC with Iraq stability responsibility suggests White House displeasure with DoD and some desperation to provide good news for the 2004 election?

How do you see this new and large NSC responsibility affecting all their other equally-important anti-terrorism responsibilities?

Dana Priest: Potentially. The story on page A10 today, about Rumsfeld being caught unawares, is instructive. Either it's an end run around him or it's complete window-dressing because he's still in charge. Should become clear very soon.
